Moiwa, 531 meters above sea level, is located almost in the center of Sapporo City.
From the summit, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the city of Sapporo, Ishikari Bay on the Sea of Japan, and Mt.
In the Ainu language, the mountain is called “Inkarsibe” (a place where people always go up to keep watch), and it used to be a “sacred place” for the Ainu people.
Sapporo was recognized as one of Japan’s “New Three Great Nightscape Cities” along with Nagasaki and Kobe at the Nightscape Summit.
The observatory at the top of the mountain offers a spectacular view of the Ishikari Plain and the lights of the city of Sapporo, which looks as if it were covered with jewels.
From the base of the mountain to the summit, visitors can take the ropeway or Mt. Moiwa Sightseeing Expressway, and from the middle of the mountain to the summit, they can take the “Moris Car,” the world’s first cable car with a driving system, through the forest.
Moiwa is popular among Sapporo citizens as a mountain that can be easily climbed. There are five trails (the shortest 2.4 km, the longest 4.5 km) that can be climbed with light clothing, and the mountain is crowded with climbers on weekends during the summer.
