Sunayama Beach is one of the most iconic beaches on Miyako Island, known for its distinctive landscape shaped by nature. Along with Yonaha Maehama Beach, it is regarded as one of the island’s signature coastal attractions and has consistently received high ratings on Japanese travel and review sites.
The beach is particularly famous for the dramatic scenery created by a sandy hill, limestone rocks, lush greenery, and brilliant blue ocean. The combination gives Sunayama Beach a unique tropical character that attracts visitors from Japan and overseas.
Sunayama Beach is located on the western coast of Miyako Island, approximately 15 minutes by car north of central Hirara. It can also be reached by bicycle, making it a popular destination for both visitors and local residents during the beach season.
A free parking area is available near the entrance, making the beach relatively easy to access compared with some of Miyako Island’s more remote coastal areas.
The beach gets its name, “Sunayama,” meaning “sand hill,” from the large sandy mound that visitors must cross to reach the coast. After climbing over the hill, the spectacular view of the beach suddenly opens up below, creating an impressive first glimpse.
On the left side of the beach stands a distinctive natural rock arch. Waves have gradually eroded the rock, creating a large opening through its center. This dramatic formation has become one of the most recognizable symbols of Sunayama Beach.
The beach itself is approximately 70 meters wide and is surrounded by Ryukyu limestone formations and green hills. The landscape is the result of natural processes that have shaped the coastline over a long period of time.
The beach is covered with exceptionally fine, powder-like white sand. Its appearance is beautiful, while walking barefoot across the soft sand provides a pleasant sensation underfoot.
Although Sunayama Beach is beautiful, visitors should take particular care when entering the water. Strong currents can occur, and powerful waves may develop on windy days.
There are no permanent lifeguards or beach patrol staff, so visitors should carefully assess sea conditions and avoid entering the water when conditions are unsafe. The beach is not an officially designated public swimming beach, making personal safety awareness especially important.
On the landward side of the sand hill, visitors can find a free parking area, changing facilities, showers, and restrooms. These facilities are located some distance from the actual beach.
During the summer season, private operators may offer rental services for leisure and beach equipment. A local licensing system was introduced in 2019, requiring operators to meet certain safety standards, including conditions related to lifeguard services.
Sunayama Beach has received strong recognition in international travel rankings. In Tripadvisor’s 2019 “Top 10 Best Beaches in Japan”, it was ranked second. It ranked fourth in 2018 and seventh in 2017.
In 2016, it was also ranked tenth among Japanese beaches in Tripadvisor’s “Travelers’ Choice World’s Best Beaches” ranking, highlighting its reputation beyond Okinawa.
Despite its beauty and popularity, Sunayama Beach has experienced serious accidents in the past. In 2014, two separate fatal incidents resulted in the deaths of four visitors who were swimming at the beach. In both cases, a high-wave advisory was in effect.
There have also been shark-related incidents in the surrounding waters. In 2000, a fatal incident involving a tiger shark occurred approximately 40 meters offshore. In 2016, a shark measuring approximately 2 to 3 meters long was reportedly spotted only about 5 meters from the shoreline.
These incidents underline the importance of checking weather and sea conditions before visiting and following local safety advice. Visitors should never enter the water simply because the beach appears calm or crowded.
Sunayama Beach is a spectacular natural attraction where a white sandy hill leads to a beautiful tropical beach framed by limestone rocks and turquoise water. Its famous natural rock arch and soft white sand make it one of Miyako Island’s most photogenic landscapes.
