Yellow Goosefish

A Little-Known Luxury Winter Fish Landed at Shonai Coast

Yellow goosefish, known as ki-anko in Japanese, is the main species of anglerfish landed along the Shonai Coast. Although it is caught locally in relatively significant numbers, it is considered a luxury fish and is not commonly found on the tables of ordinary households in the region.

The Shonai Coast is known for landing a considerable amount of anglerfish, but this fact is not widely recognized even among local residents. One reason may be that anglerfish can command high prices when demand increases. Another is the longstanding food culture of the Shonai region, where cod has traditionally been eaten more commonly than anglerfish.

Most of the Catch Is Distributed to Restaurants

The anglerfish fishing season along the Shonai Coast is relatively long, extending from autumn through the following spring. However, much of the landed fish is distributed to restaurants and other food-service establishments rather than directly to households.

As a result, even when fresh anglerfish appears at local markets, it is often purchased directly by wholesalers and quickly delivered to restaurants. This makes it relatively uncommon for local residents to encounter the fish in ordinary supermarkets or home kitchens.

Yellow Goosefish Makes Up Most of the Local Catch

Most of the anglerfish landed along the Shonai Coast are believed to be yellow goosefish, with females making up a large proportion of the catch.

Females generally grow faster and larger than males and are also believed to live longer. Larger yellow goosefish can provide not only tender flesh but also prized parts such as the liver, allowing diners to experience the rich and varied flavors that make traditional anglerfish cuisine so distinctive.

Best Enjoyed from November to February

Yellow goosefish is particularly flavorful from around November to February. As winter approaches, the liver becomes larger and richer, creating the deeply concentrated flavor for which winter anglerfish is especially valued.

Following the spawning season, anglerfish fishing is generally prohibited nationwide around July and August. Along the Shonai Coast, however, the fishing season extends from autumn into spring, making it possible to enjoy this distinctive seafood as a long-lasting winter seasonal delicacy.

A Rare Seafood Specialty to Experience Along the Shonai Coast

Yellow goosefish is landed along the Shonai Coast, yet because much of the catch is distributed to restaurants, it is not a fish that local households frequently have the opportunity to enjoy.

Its main season extends roughly from October to March, with the liver becoming especially rich during the colder winter months. For travelers interested in experiencing the seafood culture of Shonai, tasting yellow goosefish at a local restaurant offers a chance to discover one of the region’s prized winter delicacies.
