Ishigaya Park

A Spacious Recreation Park for Nature and Family Fun

Ishigaya Park is a large recreational park in Okubo-cho, Akashi City, Hyogo Prefecture. Opened in 1981, it has become a popular destination for local residents and visitors alike. Covering approximately 16 hectares, the park combines sports facilities, outdoor activities, gardens, walking trails, and open green spaces, making it an appealing place for families, nature lovers, and anyone looking to enjoy the outdoors.

Park Overview and Location

The park sits on a gently rolling hill at an elevation of approximately 85 meters, about 3.3 kilometers northeast of JR Okubo Station. It lies next to the north side of the Daini-Shinmei Expressway and is easily accessible by car. The main entrance, known as the Welcome Gate, is located north of the Okubo Interchange.

Ishigaya Park officially opened on October 24, 1981. Since 2006, its management and operation have been entrusted to the Shinki Park & Sports Management joint venture under Japan’s designated administrator system. The grounds contain a wide range of facilities, including Akashi Central Gymnasium, an equestrian area, a grazing pasture, walking and running paths, a plum grove, and a herb garden.

One of the park’s most popular attractions is Asobi no Oka, or Adventure Hill, a large playground complex featuring dinosaur-inspired play equipment. Children can climb, explore, and play in an imaginative outdoor setting. The park also has an outdoor activity area and places to admire seasonal flowers, making it a favorite spot for relaxation and recreation throughout the year.

A Popular Destination for Plum Blossoms and Cherry Blossoms

Ishigaya Park is particularly well known for its plum and cherry blossoms. Its plum grove contains approximately 1,000 trees bearing both red and white flowers, making it one of the larger plum-viewing areas in Akashi City. The blossoms generally reach their peak in late February, when visitors come to enjoy the colorful displays and the first signs of spring.

Cherry blossoms are another major attraction. Approximately 500 cherry trees grow around the outdoor activity area, usually reaching full bloom in early April. During the peak season, the park draws large crowds for hanami, the Japanese tradition of enjoying flowers with family and friends. On busy weekends, the parking lot can fill to capacity, so arriving early is advisable.

History and Development

Development of Ishigaya Park began in 1979, and the park opened to the public on October 24, 1981. In 2012, its playground equipment was renewed, and the new children’s adventure area, officially named Akashikko Yume to Boken: Asobi no Oka, opened. This renovation further established the park as a major family recreation destination in the city.

The Natural Setting of Akashi

Akashi City lies in southern Hyogo Prefecture and is known for its views of the Akashi Strait and Awaji Island. The Japanese Standard Time Meridian, located at 135 degrees east longitude, passes through the city. Its landscape combines flat urban areas with gently rolling hills, and Ishigaya Park makes use of this natural terrain to provide open spaces and wooded surroundings.

In fiscal year 1976, the northern part of the Okubo district, where the park now stands, was largely covered in woodland. Subsequent development created the park and its recreational facilities. Ishigaya Park is approximately eight kilometers northwest of the Akashi Municipal Planetarium and about five kilometers from Fujie Beach, offering a convenient base for exploring other parts of Akashi.

Facilities Within the Park

Akashi Central Gymnasium

One of the park’s main facilities is Akashi Central Gymnasium, a multipurpose sports and community center with a total floor area of approximately 7,980 square meters. It contains two sports arenas of different sizes, along with meeting rooms, a lobby, vending-machine areas, and a lounge. The building accommodates a variety of sporting, cultural, and community activities throughout the year.

Outdoor Recreation and Gardens

Other facilities include Asobi no Oka, the equestrian area and grazing pasture, walking and running trails, the plum grove, the herb garden, an outdoor activity area, and open lawns. Together, these amenities provide opportunities for exercise, nature appreciation, and group recreation.

Barbecue Area

A designated barbecue area is available free of charge, but advance reservations are required. It generally operates on weekends and public holidays from March through October, with 24 barbecue spaces available. It is a convenient option for families and groups who want to spend a day outdoors.

Parking

The park has a free parking lot with space for approximately 350 vehicles, making it convenient for visitors traveling by car. During the plum and cherry blossom seasons, however, parking can become busy, especially on weekends and holidays.
