Jinzu Onsen (Hot Spring)

A Peaceful Mountain Hot Spring Known as a “Beauty Bath”

Jinzu Onsen is a tranquil hot spring facility located in the mountains of Kinokawa City, Wakayama Prefecture. Surrounded by the beautiful natural scenery of the Kisen Mountain Range, this peaceful retreat offers visitors a chance to relax and escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

One of the main attractions of Jinzu Onsen is its distinctive spring water, which is known for its highly alkaline properties and refreshing effect on the skin. For this reason, the hot spring is often described in Japan as a “Beauty Bath”, and it attracts visitors from both nearby areas and farther afield.

A Rare and Highly Alkaline Hot Spring

The most remarkable feature of Jinzu Onsen is its unusual water quality. The spring is a cold mineral spring with a temperature of approximately 21.2°C, but it has an exceptionally high alkaline pH of 10.5.

Highly alkaline hot springs are often appreciated in Japan for the smooth sensation they leave on the skin. The water is said to gently remove old skin cells, leaving the skin feeling soft and refreshed after bathing. This characteristic has earned Jinzu Onsen its reputation as a “Beauty Bath”.

The spring water also contains components that are noted for their cleansing and antibacterial properties, making the water particularly distinctive. The water itself is clear and colorless, with little to no taste and a faint sulfur-like aroma. Together, these characteristics create a bathing experience that feels closely connected to the natural environment.

A Mysterious Spring with Changing Characteristics

Jinzu Onsen is also associated with an intriguing natural phenomenon: the appearance of its spring water is said to change depending on natural conditions and the passage of time.

Local accounts suggest that factors such as atmospheric pressure, the tides, and even the rotation of the Earth may influence changes in the appearance of the water. The spring may appear somewhat darker or lighter at different times, giving it an almost mysterious quality.

For visitors, this means that the experience of Jinzu Onsen may not always be exactly the same. Its changing appearance adds another fascinating element to a visit and highlights the close relationship between the hot spring and the natural environment.

A Relaxing Hot Spring Facility Surrounded by Nature

Jinzu Onsen has a day-use bathing facility located along the prefectural road, making it a convenient place to stop during a drive through the mountains. The facility has a calm and welcoming atmosphere where visitors can take their time and enjoy a relaxing break.

One of its particularly popular features is the barrel sauna, which has a warm wooden interior and allows guests to enjoy self-poured steam, known as self-roasting or self-loylyu. By adding water to the sauna stones themselves, visitors can adjust the humidity and create a sauna environment that suits their preference.

Sauna, Cold-Water Bath and Outdoor Relaxation

After enjoying the sauna, visitors can cool down in a cold-water bath supplied with natural spring water. This is followed by a relaxing period in the outdoor rest area, where guests can enjoy the fresh mountain air.

This combination of sauna, cold-water bathing and outdoor relaxation is popular in Japan as a way to refresh both body and mind. It is often described using the Japanese expression “totonou,” referring to a deep sense of relaxation and refreshment after using a sauna.

Relax While Enjoying the Beauty of the Mountains

The natural surroundings are an important part of the Jinzu Onsen experience. The facility is surrounded by forests and mountain scenery, allowing visitors to enjoy the changing landscape throughout the year.

In spring, fresh greenery brings a lively atmosphere to the mountains, while summer offers cool mountain air and lush vegetation. Autumn is particularly attractive when the surrounding foliage changes color, and winter brings a quiet, peaceful landscape.

Soaking in the warm water while listening to the sounds of nature provides a welcome opportunity to slow down. Away from busy cities and crowded tourist attractions, visitors can simply enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the mountains.

Enjoy a Meal After Your Bath

Jinzu Onsen also has an on-site dining area, providing a convenient place to relax after bathing. Both traditional Japanese-style seating and table seating are available, making the restaurant suitable for families, couples and groups.

Enjoying a meal after a relaxing bath is a familiar part of the Japanese hot spring experience. Visitors can take their time over a meal and continue enjoying the peaceful atmosphere of the mountain surroundings before returning to their journey.

How to Get to Jinzu Onsen

Jinzu Onsen can be reached by both car and public transportation.

By Car

When traveling by car, take Osaka Prefectural Road / Wakayama Prefectural Road 62 (Izumisano-Uchita Line). From the direction of Inunakiyama Onsen, the journey toward Kinokawa takes approximately 10 minutes.

By Public Transportation

Visitors using public transportation can take a route operated by Wakayama Bus Naga. Get off at the Jinzu bus stop, which is located immediately near the facility.

A Special Retreat Where Nature and Hot Springs Meet

Jinzu Onsen offers a very different experience from the large and busy hot spring resorts found in Japan’s major tourist destinations. Its greatest appeal lies in its peaceful mountain setting, distinctive spring water and relaxing facilities.

The exceptionally alkaline spring, the intriguing changes in the appearance of the water, the barrel sauna and the surrounding natural scenery combine to create a memorable experience for visitors looking for somewhere quiet and refreshing.

For international travelers, a visit to Jinzu Onsen is also an opportunity to experience a quieter side of Japanese hot spring culture. Rather than simply sightseeing, visitors can slow down, enjoy the surrounding landscape and take time to relax.

If you are looking for a peaceful place to refresh your body and mind away from the crowds, Jinzu Onsen is a wonderful destination to consider during a trip through Wakayama Prefecture.
