Matsukawa River

A Spectacular Mountain Valley Through Every Season

The Matsukawa River flows through the mountainous landscapes of northern Nagano Prefecture before joining the Chikuma River. Rising in the mountains of Takayama Village and passing through Obuse Town and Suzaka City, it forms part of the Shinano River water system.

The most scenic section is Matsukawa Gorge, a dramatic mountain valley famous throughout Japan for its spectacular autumn foliage. The combination of rushing water, rugged rock formations, dense forests, and nearby hot spring resorts makes the gorge one of the highlights of Takayama Village.

The Matsukawa River and Its Mountain Landscape

From the Mountains to the Chikuma River

The Matsukawa River originates around Mount Yokote, on the border between Nagano and Gunma prefectures. From the mountains of Takayama Village, the river flows westward through a landscape of steep slopes and deep valleys.

Along its upper reaches, the river has carved out Matsukawa Gorge, creating a rugged landscape surrounded by forests. Farther downstream, the river passes along the boundary between Obuse Town and Suzaka City before flowing into the Chikuma River.

Below the central part of Takayama Village, the terrain gradually opens into an alluvial fan. The fertile soil created by the river has helped form an important agricultural area, showing how the Matsukawa has shaped both the landscape and the local way of life.

Tributaries and the River Ecosystem

The Matsukawa is part of the Shinano River system and receives water from several tributaries, including the Toizawa River and Hozawa River. Together, these waterways support the rich natural environment of the surrounding mountain valleys.

Hot Springs Along the Upper Matsukawa River

The upper reaches of the river are home to the Shinshu Takayama Hot Spring Village, a collection of mountain hot spring resorts surrounded by forests and dramatic valley scenery.

Yamada Onsen, Goshiki Onsen, and Shichimi Onsen are among the best-known hot springs in the area. Each offers a distinctive bathing experience, allowing visitors to combine sightseeing in the mountains with the traditional Japanese pleasure of soaking in natural hot spring water.

This close relationship between the river, mountains, and hot springs is one of the defining characteristics of the Takayama area.

The Beauty of Matsukawa Gorge

One of Japan’s Famous Autumn Foliage Destinations

Matsukawa Gorge is particularly famous for its autumn colors and has been selected among Japan’s notable destinations for viewing fall foliage. When autumn arrives, the entire valley is transformed into a brilliant tapestry of red, yellow, and orange leaves.

The colorful trees contrast beautifully with the flowing river and exposed rock faces, creating dramatic scenery at every turn. The autumn foliage is generally at its best from mid-October to early November.

Much of the scenery can be enjoyed from roads running alongside the gorge, making it possible to admire the autumn landscape without a long hike. For a closer encounter with nature, the Matsukawa Gorge Walking Trail allows visitors to explore the valley on foot and experience the sounds and atmosphere of the forest and river.

Kaminari Falls: A Dramatic Waterfall

One of the most famous sights in Matsukawa Gorge is Kaminari Falls. The waterfall is also known as a “behind-the-waterfall” waterfall because visitors can walk behind the falling water and observe it from an unusual viewpoint.

With a drop of approximately 30 meters, the waterfall crashes down the rock face with tremendous force. The roar of the water and the spray rising from the falls create an impressive natural spectacle. The name Kaminari, meaning “thunder,” is said to have been inspired by the thunderous sound of the waterfall.

Standing near the falls provides a vivid sense of the power of the mountains and the river that has carved this valley over time.

Matsukawa Gorge Onsen Takinoyu

Open-Air Bath Surrounded by Nature

Near Kaminari Falls is Matsukawa Gorge Onsen Takinoyu, a hot spring facility famous for its enormous outdoor bath built around the natural rocks of the gorge.

The open-air bath stretches approximately 17 meters and is notable for its traditional mixed-gender bathing style. Rather than separating visitors from the surrounding landscape, the bath is designed as an immersive experience in which the mountains and river valley become part of the scenery.

Each season creates a different atmosphere. Fresh green foliage in spring, cool mountain breezes in summer, brilliant autumn leaves, and snow-covered scenery in winter can all be enjoyed from the bath.

Autumn is particularly memorable, when colorful trees surround the bathing area and their reflections and foliage create a spectacular mountain panorama. Soaking in warm water while looking directly into the forest offers a uniquely Japanese way to experience the changing seasons.

Natural Hot Spring Water Known as a “Natural Lotion”

The spring water at Takinoyu is traditionally valued for its pleasant effect on the skin and is sometimes described as a “natural lotion.” The bath uses natural hot spring water directly from the source without adding water to dilute it.

Another interesting feature is the natural variation in water temperature within the bath. Depending on where you sit, you can find areas that feel relatively hot or cooler, allowing bathers to choose a spot that suits their preference.

Enjoying the Mixed-Gender Open-Air Bath

Because the large outdoor bath is mixed-gender, appropriate bathing attire is recommended. Women are encouraged to wear the free paper bra and shorts, a bathing towel, or a swimsuit. Men are required to wear the free paper trunks or a swimsuit.

These arrangements allow visitors who may be unfamiliar with traditional Japanese mixed-gender bathing to enjoy the experience more comfortably and confidently.

How to Visit Matsukawa Gorge

Access by Car

Matsukawa Gorge and Matsukawa Gorge Onsen are approximately 30 minutes by car from the Suzaka-Naganohigashi Interchange on the Joshin-etsu Expressway.

Access by Public Transportation

Visitors traveling without a car can reach the Takayama Village area from Suzaka Station on the Nagano Electric Railway. Buses and taxis provide access toward the hot spring resorts and Matsukawa Gorge.
