Moriguchi Daikon (Tenmangu-mae Daikon)

The World’s Longest Naniwa Traditional Vegetable

Moriguchi Daikon is a traditional vegetable from Moriguchi City in Osaka Prefecture. Known for its extraordinary length, some specimens can grow to nearly 2 meters, making it one of the longest radishes in the world.

Also Known as Tenmangu-mae Daikon

Moriguchi Daikon is said to have received its name after Toyotomi Hideyoshi gave the name “Moriguchi-zuke” to pickles made from the radish. Because the vegetable is traditionally associated with the area around Osaka Tenmangu Shrine, it is also known as Tenmangu-mae Daikon.

It has been recognized as one of Osaka Prefecture’s “Naniwa Traditional Vegetables”, reflecting its historical importance in the region’s agricultural and food culture.

A Radish That Can Grow Nearly 2 Meters Long

The most remarkable feature of Moriguchi Daikon is its extraordinary length. Some radishes can approach 2 meters, giving the vegetable an unusual appearance compared with the familiar short, thick daikon varieties commonly seen in Japan.

Its great length also made it particularly suitable for processing into pickles, especially the traditional specialty known as Moriguchi-zuke.

From Osaka to the Kiso River Region

Today, Moriguchi Daikon is mainly cultivated along the Kiso River in Aichi and Gifu prefectures for use in Moriguchi-zuke. In Osaka, however, cultivation declined and eventually disappeared after the Meiji period as urbanization progressed.

Efforts are now being made to revive Moriguchi Daikon cultivation in Osaka and preserve this distinctive traditional vegetable for future generations.

A Traditional Osaka Vegetable Worth Discovering

Moriguchi Daikon is an unusual example of Osaka’s agricultural heritage. Its extraordinary length, connection with Moriguchi-zuke, and long history make it a distinctive part of the region’s food culture.

Season

The listed season for Moriguchi Daikon is December through January, making it a traditional winter vegetable.
