Noda Ebisu Shrine

A Historic Shrine in Fukushima for Prosperity in Business

Noda Ebisu Shrine is a Shinto shrine located in Fukushima Ward, Osaka City. Its official name is simply Ebisu Shrine, but it is commonly known as Noda Ebisu Shrine. With a long history of local worship, the shrine remains closely connected to the community.

History and Origins

There are no surviving records that establish the exact date of the shrine’s foundation. However, a granite monument preserved on the shrine grounds bears an inscription dated March 1115. Based on this inscription, the shrine is believed to have originated during the Heian period.

The surrounding area was once said to consist of numerous islands known as Naniwa Yasojima, or the “Eighty Islands of Naniwa.” Over time, sediment carried by the Yodo River gradually transformed the area into land. By the late Heian period, settlements had developed where people engaged in agriculture and fishing.

From this early period, Noda Ebisu Shrine was worshipped by local fishermen as the shrine of Ebisu Okami, a deity traditionally associated with fishing, commerce, prosperity, and good fortune.

History of the Shrine and Its Connection with Noda Castle

During the Sengoku period, a fortified site known as Noda Castle was built in the area. The shrine is believed to have been incorporated into the castle complex.

During the Siege of Noda and Fukushima, a conflict involving Oda Nobunaga and the Miyoshi Triumvirate, the shrine became a place of worship for the warriors defending the castle.
