Oki Beef

A Rare Japanese Black Beef Raised in the Natural Beauty of the Oki Islands

Oki Beef is a premium brand of Japanese Black beef produced in the Oki Islands of Shimane Prefecture. Only cattle born and raised in the Oki Islands that meet strict quality standards can be sold under the Oki Beef name. Raised amid the islands’ rich natural environment, the beef is known for its beautiful marbling and rich, full-bodied flavor characteristic of Japanese Black cattle.

To qualify as Oki Beef, cattle must be female cattle that have never given birth and must be born and raised in one of the four municipalities of the Oki Islands: Ama Town, Nishinoshima Town, Chibu Village, or Okinoshima Town. In addition, the beef must receive a meat quality grade of 4 or higher under the grading system of the Japan Meat Grading Association. By setting standards not only for the place of origin but also for gender and meat quality, the Oki Beef brand maintains consistently high standards.

Raised Amid the Rich Natural Environment of the Oki Islands

The Oki Islands are blessed with a diverse natural landscape where the sea and mountains come together. Oki Beef cattle are carefully raised in this peaceful environment, surrounded by the islands’ abundant natural resources.

The cattle are fed locally sourced feed rich in minerals and carefully raised in the distinctive environment of the Oki Islands, where fresh sea breezes blow across the land. The favorable surroundings and attentive husbandry help produce beef that allows diners to appreciate the natural character of Japanese Black cattle.

Beautiful Marbling and Deep, Rich Beef Flavor

One of the greatest attractions of Oki Beef is its combination of beautiful marbling and a rich, satisfying beef flavor. The finely distributed marbling gives the meat an appealing appearance, while the fat melts in the mouth and releases a rich, savory aroma.

Along with the creamy richness of the fat characteristic of Japanese Black beef, Oki Beef also offers a distinct flavor from the meat itself. Preparing it simply allows the quality of the beef to shine, providing a luxurious dining experience without needing elaborate seasoning.

Enjoy Oki Beef as Shabu-Shabu or Yakiniku

Two excellent ways to experience Oki Beef are shabu-shabu and yakiniku. For shabu-shabu, thin slices of beef are briefly swirled in hot broth. The marbled fat melts gently, creating a delicious combination of the meat’s savory flavor and the natural sweetness of the fat.

With yakiniku, the beef is grilled over high heat, giving the surface a fragrant, lightly charred finish while bringing out the richness of the marbling and the deep flavor of the meat. Because the beef can be enjoyed with minimal seasoning, grilling is an excellent way to appreciate its quality and character.

A Premium Beef That Reflects the Nature and Food Culture of the Oki Islands

Oki Beef is a rare Japanese Black beef raised amid the rich natural environment and distinctive agricultural traditions of the Oki Islands. Only cattle born and raised in the islands’ four municipalities and meeting requirements such as a meat quality grade of 4 or higher can carry the Oki Beef name.

With its beautiful marbling and rich, satisfying flavor, Oki Beef is one of Shimane’s regional specialties worth seeking out when visiting the Oki Islands. Enjoy it as shabu-shabu or yakiniku, where the natural qualities of the meat can take center stage, and savor the luxurious taste nurtured by the magnificent natural surroundings of the Oki Islands.
