Also known as the “Maritime Alps” because of its array of oddly shaped rocks, Cheonghae Island is a representative scenic spot of the Kita-Nagato Kaigan National Park.
The island is approximately 40 kilometers in circumference. The Aomi Bridge crosses the island at its narrowest point, about 50 meters from the mainland, and can be crossed by car.
The three sides of the island, east, west, north, and west, are exposed to the rough waves of the Sea of Japan, and the waves have eroded the cliffs, caves, stone pillars, and reefs, creating a magnificent and varied landscape of 16 km of spectacular scenery.
Sightseeing boats depart from Senzaki Port on the mainland to take visitors around the perimeter of the island.
The boat takes visitors through stone pillars and natural caves, and the rough seas make for a thrilling and powerful tour of the spectacular scenery.
The area has been selected as one of the 100 most scenic spots in Japan.
It is designated as a national scenic beauty spot and a natural monument.
In the central part of Shizugepura, there are campgrounds, beaches, and nature trails.
On the east side where the fishing port is located, from the Edo period (1603-1867) to the end of the Meiji period (1868-1912), whaling was conducted in the old whaling method, in which whales were driven into the bay and fishermen jumped on top of the whales and stuck harpoons into them.
The “Whale Tomb” (built in 1692, a national historic site), where the fetuses of whales taken at that time are buried, is located at Mukigan-ji Temple, and the “Whale Museum” is nearby.
