Peanuts

Chiba’s Signature Local Specialty

When people think of local specialties from Chiba Prefecture, peanuts are one of the first foods that come to mind. Chiba is one of Japan’s leading peanut-producing regions and accounts for a particularly large share of the country’s domestic production.

In 2010, approximately 90% of all peanuts distributed in Japan were imported, while domestically produced peanuts accounted for only around 10%. Of that domestic production, approximately 70% was grown in Chiba Prefecture.

Why Chiba Peanuts Are So Popular

Carefully Dried to Bring Out Their Flavor

One characteristic of peanuts produced in Chiba is the traditional practice of allowing them to dry naturally in the field. After harvesting, the peanuts are carefully dried, helping to develop their characteristic sweetness, richness, and aroma.

Chiba’s climate and agricultural environment are also well suited to peanut cultivation. The prefecture’s peanuts are enjoyed in many forms, including roasted peanuts, boiled peanuts, sweets, and other regional products.

The History of Peanuts in Japan

Introduced During the Edo Period

Peanuts are believed to have been introduced to Japan during the Edo period (1603–1868). Their name was already recorded in Yamato Honzo, an influential Japanese medical and natural history book published during the Edo period.

The peanut was also known around the world long before it became established as a popular agricultural crop in Japan. According to a commonly told historical account, Christopher Columbus encountered peanuts through Indigenous peoples of the West Indies. The nutritious nuts were subsequently valued as a useful food during long sea voyages and gradually spread to other parts of the world.

Enjoy Chiba’s Peanuts

Chiba peanuts are available in a wide range of products, making them an easy local specialty to try or take home as a souvenir. Their rich flavor and distinctive aroma have made them an important part of Chiba’s food culture.

For travelers exploring Chiba, sampling locally grown peanuts is a simple but delicious way to discover one of the prefecture’s most recognizable agricultural products.

Peak Season

September, October, and November

Autumn is the main season for enjoying freshly harvested Chiba peanuts. This period is particularly suitable for visitors who want to experience the flavor of peanuts close to their harvest season.

A Taste of Chiba’s Agricultural Heritage

Peanuts are one of Chiba Prefecture’s best-known local specialties, supported by a long history of cultivation and traditional agricultural practices. The large share of Japan’s domestic peanut production represented by Chiba makes the crop an important part of the prefecture’s agricultural identity.

Whether enjoyed roasted, boiled, or incorporated into local sweets and snacks, Chiba peanuts offer visitors a flavorful introduction to the region’s food culture.
