Ritsurin Park

A Japanese garden that is well worth a visit

Located at the eastern foot of Mt. Shikun, this garden has a nearly 400-year history and has been designated as a national special scenic beauty spot.
It is the largest Japanese garden in Japan, covering an area of approximately 75 hectares, and has six ponds and 13 artificial hills against the backdrop of Mt.

The garden is rich in plants and trees, especially black pine, and is dotted with cherry blossoms, irises, bush clovers, Japanese bush clovers, plum blossoms, and other flowers of the four seasons.
The garden is divided into a Japanese-style south garden and an open Meiji Western-style north garden.

The garden is said to be “more beautiful than the three most famous gardens in Japan” because of its excellent site layout and masonry, and the elegance of the trees and stones.
The view from Sukugetsu-tei, a rare teahouse with four sides facing the garden, and from the Bastoreum Bridge over South Lake is superb.
