Shimeitei Observatory

A Scenic View of Lake Towada in the Shape of a Heart

Shimeitei Observatory is a scenic viewpoint offering a panoramic view of Lake Towada, which stretches across Aomori and Akita Prefectures. Located along the Jukai Line, the shortest driving route from the Kosaka Interchange on the Tohoku Expressway toward Lake Towada, the observatory is an easy and rewarding stop during a sightseeing drive.

The most distinctive feature of Shimeitei Observatory is the view of Lake Towada appearing in the shape of a heart. Created naturally by the shape of the lake and surrounding peninsula, this charming view has attracted attention in recent years as a hidden scenic and romantic spot.

An Easy-to-Reach Scenic Viewpoint

Shimeitei Observatory is located approximately 500 meters beyond Hakka Pass Observatory along the Jukai Line. It stands at a slightly higher elevation than Hakka Pass Observatory, providing a different perspective over Lake Towada.

The observatory is also extremely convenient to access. From the Shimeitei parking area, it takes less than a minute on foot to reach the viewpoint. This makes it suitable not only for visitors who want to avoid a long walk but also for travelers with limited time.

Because the observatory is located shortly after turning onto the Jukai Line from National Route 103, it is easy to include in a Lake Towada sightseeing itinerary. Visitors traveling by car can stop here briefly while enjoying the surrounding mountain scenery.

A Special View of Lake Towada in a Heart Shape

The view from Shimeitei Observatory encompasses the section of Lake Towada known as Nishi-no-Umi, or “Western Lake,” as well as the area around Yasumiya Port. The shape of the Nakayama Peninsula overlaps with the lake in such a way that the landscape appears to form a beautiful heart.

This distinctive perspective is unique to Shimeitei Observatory and makes it one of the area’s most popular locations for photography. The heart-shaped lake is especially appealing to visitors looking for memorable travel photographs.

The Best View from the Second Floor

For the clearest view of the heart-shaped outline, it is recommended to climb to the second floor of the observatory. From the higher viewpoint, the shape of the lake becomes easier to recognize, creating a particularly striking composition for photographs.

The first floor already provides a beautiful view of Lake Towada, but taking the short climb to the second floor offers a different and more impressive perspective.

The History of Shimeitei Observatory and Japan’s New Eight Scenic Views

Shimeitei Observatory also has an interesting connection with the history of scenic tourism in Japan.

In 1927, Tokyo Nichinichi Shimbun and Osaka Mainichi Shimbun organized a nationwide public vote to select outstanding scenic locations in Japan. The resulting list was known as the “New Eight Views of Japan”.

In the category for lakes and wetlands, Lake Towada was ranked first. The result demonstrated how highly the landscape was regarded by people throughout Japan at the time.

The Monument to the New Eight Views of Japan

To commemorate this achievement, a monument was erected at Shimeitei in 1931. The location was selected because it offered one of the most beautiful panoramic views of Lake Towada.

The New Eight Views of Japan monument remains at the observatory today. It is an important historical feature of the site and also serves as a popular spot for visitors to take photographs commemorating their trip.

Lake Towada Through the Four Seasons

The scenery from Shimeitei Observatory changes dramatically with the seasons, offering a different experience throughout the year.

Spring

In spring, fresh green leaves begin to appear around Lake Towada. The combination of the emerging greenery, clear lake, and mountain landscape creates a fresh and peaceful atmosphere.

Summer

In summer, the surrounding forests become lush and deep green, contrasting beautifully with the blue surface of the lake. The cool mountain environment and refreshing scenery make this an especially pleasant time to enjoy the panoramic view.

Autumn

Autumn is one of the most spectacular seasons at Shimeitei Observatory. The forests surrounding the lake and the outer mountain slopes turn shades of red, orange, and yellow, creating a magnificent frame around the heart-shaped Lake Towada.

Under suitable weather conditions, clouds may also settle over the lake like a sea of clouds. When this happens, the landscape takes on a mysterious and almost dreamlike appearance.

Lake Towada and the Surrounding National Park

Lake Towada was formed through volcanic activity that continued over a period beginning approximately 200,000 years ago. It is a remarkable double-caldera lake and forms one of the central natural attractions of the Towada-Hachimantai National Park.

The lake itself has been designated a Special Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument of Japan, reflecting both its outstanding landscape and geological importance.

There are walking trails, sightseeing boat cruises, campgrounds, and other recreational facilities around the lake, allowing visitors to enjoy its scenery from many different perspectives.

From Lake Towada to Oirase Gorge and Hachimantai

Lake Towada is also part of a much larger natural tourism area. The nearby Oirase Gorge is famous for its beautiful stream, waterfalls, and forest scenery, while the Hachimantai area offers mountain landscapes, hiking opportunities, and hot spring resorts.

Combining a visit to Shimeitei Observatory with these destinations makes it possible to experience the diverse natural beauty of northern Tohoku, from caldera lakes and mountain forests to streams and traditional hot springs.

Things to Know Before Visiting

Shimeitei Observatory is closed during the winter season. It is generally unavailable from around mid-November through late April, although the exact period can vary depending on road and weather conditions.

Visitors planning a trip during the colder months should check the latest road-opening and access information in advance. Snow and winter weather can significantly affect transportation around the Lake Towada area.

A Memorable View of Lake Towada

Shimeitei Observatory is a small but memorable destination where visitors can enjoy one of the most distinctive views of Lake Towada. The naturally heart-shaped lake, the historic monument commemorating its selection as one of Japan’s New Eight Scenic Views, and the changing colors of the surrounding landscape all contribute to its appeal.

Its convenient location along the Jukai Line and the very short walk from the parking area make it particularly easy to visit during a road trip around Lake Towada.

For international travelers exploring northern Tohoku, Shimeitei Observatory is an excellent place to pause, admire the extraordinary landscape of Lake Towada, and capture a photograph of the lake’s unique heart-shaped form.
