Shimizu Jizoji Temple is a temple of the Omuro School of Shingon Buddhism located in Shimizu, Kawachinagano City, Osaka Prefecture. It is also known as Jizoji Temple or Shimizu Jizoji.
The exact date of its foundation is unknown. However, the temple was rebuilt in 1691 by the Buddhist monk Rentai, and it has continued to be cherished by local worshippers and visitors ever since.
Jizoji Temple experienced a period of decline before being rebuilt in 1691 by Rentai, who was both the nephew and disciple of Jogon, the monk responsible for reviving Enmeiji Temple. Rentai rebuilt Jizoji in his birthplace, Shimizu Village.
At the time, the temple was given the mountain name Tamaizan.
Later, Honda Iyonokami Tadamune, lord of the Nishidai Domain that governed Shimizu Village, visited the temple. He compared the surrounding landscape to Mount Jiuhua, a famous sacred mountain in Anhui Province, China, and presented the temple with the mountain name Kyukazan.
As a result, in 1717, the mountain name was changed from Tamaizan to Kyukazan. This name has been preserved to the present day.
Rentai and Honda Tadamune developed a close friendship. When Tadamune visited the temple, the two are said to have enjoyed exchanging Chinese-style poetry.
This cultural exchange contributed significantly to the development and prosperity of Jizoji Temple.
The main hall houses a variety of Buddhist statues, including the temple’s principal image, a Jizo Bodhisattva, as well as statues of the Four Heavenly Kings, Kobo Daishi, Amida Nyorai, and Aizen Myoo.
These Buddhist images provide visitors with an opportunity to experience the deep religious traditions of the temple in a quiet and contemplative setting.
Jizoji Temple is also known for its beautiful natural surroundings, which change throughout the four seasons.
Spring: Rhododendrons bloom throughout the temple grounds, creating a colorful and refreshing atmosphere.
Summer: The calls of lesser cuckoos echo through the mountains, while the cool mountain air offers a welcome escape from the summer heat.
Autumn: The grounds are transformed by brilliant autumn foliage, attracting many worshippers and visitors.
Winter: Snow-covered temple buildings and quiet surroundings create a serene landscape that encourages peaceful reflection.
Jizoji Temple has been designated as an Osaka Prefectural Place of Scenic Beauty, reflecting the cultural and scenic value of its grounds.
The temple is also known as the first temple of the Kawachi-Izumi 24 Jizo Sacred Sites pilgrimage, attracting visitors who come to pay their respects and experience its tranquil atmosphere.
The nearest station is Chihayaguchi Station on the Nankai Koya Line.
From the station, the temple is approximately 1 kilometer southwest on foot.
Surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery, Shimizu Jizoji Temple combines the history of Japanese Buddhism with the peaceful beauty of the natural landscape.
The story of its reconstruction by Rentai, his cultural friendship with Honda Tadamune, and the temple’s changing scenery throughout the year all contribute to its distinctive character.
For visitors seeking a quiet place away from the bustle of the city, Jizoji offers a chance to experience the atmosphere of a historic temple while enjoying the seasonal beauty of the mountains of Kawachinagano.
