Nikko Toshogu Shrine

A masterpiece of glittering Japanese architecture

The shrine is dedicated to the spirit of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo Shogunate. The gorgeous architecture represented by the Yomeimon Gate is unparalleled in its mixed Shinto/Buddhist style.

Together with Kunouzan Toshogu Shrine and Ueno Toshogu Shrine, it is one of the three major Toshogu shrines.
Five of the eight buildings are designated as National Treasures, and 34 are designated as Important Cultural Properties.
The two shrines and one temple, including Rinnoji Temple and Nikko Futaarasan Shrine, are registered as UNESCO World Heritage sites as “Shrines and Temples of Nikko.
