Yakurai Garden is a spacious English-style garden located in Kami Town, Miyagi Prefecture. Open from spring through autumn, the garden covers approximately 150,000 square meters—about the size of three Tokyo Domes—and is home to around 400 varieties of flowers and herbs.
Because the flowers change with the seasons, every visit offers a different landscape, color palette, and fragrance. Walking through the garden can feel like stepping into a beautifully painted landscape, surrounded by flowers, greenery, and the natural scenery of the Yakurai Mountains.
Yakurai Garden is divided into eight themed gardens, each offering a different atmosphere and style.
In spring, colorful tulips and pansies brighten the garden. Early summer brings fragrant roses and lavender, while autumn is marked by fields of cosmos and dahlias.
Since the scenery changes considerably depending on when you visit, Yakurai Garden is a destination that can be enjoyed repeatedly throughout its open season.
One of the most popular areas is Fururu Hill, where seasonal flowers cover the rolling hillside like a vast, colorful carpet.
The majestic silhouette of Mount Yakurai rises in the background, creating a beautiful contrast between the flowers and the surrounding natural landscape. The combination of the flower-covered hill and mountain scenery also makes this one of the garden’s most photogenic locations.
The Rose Garden is filled with the rich fragrance and elegant colors of roses during their flowering season. Walking through this area allows visitors to enjoy not only the visual beauty of the flowers but also their distinctive scents.
The Herb Garden features approximately 100 varieties of herbs. Seasonal plants provide a variety of colors, textures, and aromas, allowing visitors to experience the garden through more than just sight.
Other areas feature walking paths, benches, and quiet spaces where visitors can take their time and enjoy the surrounding flowers and greenery.
Yakurai Garden opened in 1997 as part of Yakurai Resort, a leisure destination developed around Mount Yakurai.
In addition to the garden, the resort area includes facilities such as a golf course, cottages, and an indoor swimming pool. Visitors can therefore combine sightseeing in the garden with outdoor activities, leisure, and accommodation.
The garden’s approximately 150,000-square-meter grounds are carefully maintained with a wide range of seasonal flowers, trees, and other plants.
Roses and lavender are particularly notable when they are in bloom, filling the garden with beautiful colors and pleasant fragrances. Seasonal herbs and foliage plants also add variety, making the garden an enjoyable place for visitors who appreciate both flowers and the wider natural environment.
From approximately September to October, Yakurai Garden hosts a special evening illumination event. After sunset, the garden is transformed by carefully placed lights, creating an atmosphere quite different from that of the daytime.
The illuminated Fururu Hill becomes particularly dramatic at night. Flowers and landscapes take on a magical appearance, making the event popular with visitors who enjoy photography as well as those looking for a romantic evening experience.
Yakurai Garden also has a souvenir shop, restaurant, and café, making it easy to take a break during a visit.
Visitors can enjoy dishes and sweets made with local ingredients, while garden-themed souvenirs include items such as herbal teas and flower-related goods.
Direct buses from JR Sendai Station operate seasonally on certain weekends and holidays.
From JR Nishi-Furukawa Station, the garden is approximately 30 minutes by car.
From Sendai Airport, the drive takes approximately 80 to 90 minutes via the Tohoku Expressway and connecting roads.
Parking facilities are available around the garden, making a rental car or private vehicle a convenient option for visitors who want to explore the surrounding Yakurai area as well.
