The 55-meter drop and 6-meter wide waterfall cascades down with a roaring sound.
Along with Kegon Falls (Tochigi Prefecture) and Nachi Falls (Wakayama Prefecture), it is sometimes referred to as one of the three greatest waterfalls in Japan or one of the three most famous waterfalls in Japan. It is designated as a national place of scenic beauty and selected as one of the 100 best waterfalls in Japan.
In early summer, when the fresh green foliage is dazzling, and in autumn, when the autumn foliage is beautiful, the contrast with the surrounding scenery makes the view even more spectacular. In early February, during the coldest season of the year, Akiu Great Falls sometimes freezes over.
From the Akiu Great Falls parking lot, a 1.0-km promenade leads to Takimitodai.
You can also go down the promenade from the side of the Fudotaki Bridge to the basin of the waterfall. The area around the basin of the waterfall is misty with the spray of the falling waterfall, and looking up at the Great Falls is a very powerful sight.
It takes about 5 to 10 minutes on foot from the main parking lot to the waterfall viewing platform, and about 20 to 30 minutes to the waterfall basin.
The nearby Sendai City Akiu Great Falls Botanical Garden is home to about 200 species of plants and 15,000 trees.
Located near Akiu Onsen, the area attracts many tourists.
