Aomori Ekimae Beach

A Relaxing Seaside Space in the Heart of the City

Aomori Station Beach is an artificial beach created by restoring a former waterfront pier used by the Seikan Ferry, which once connected Aomori on Honshu with Hokkaido. The project aimed to recreate the area’s former sandy shoreline while helping restore local ecosystems and the traditional relationship between the people of Aomori and the sea.

The beach opened in July 2021 as a new waterfront attraction in front of Aomori Station. Today, it provides a peaceful seaside space where visitors can relax while enjoying the atmosphere of Aomori’s bay area.

A Seaside Retreat Just Five Minutes from the Station

Located approximately a five-minute walk from JR Aomori Station, Aomori Station Beach is conveniently situated between A-FACTORY and Nebuta Museum Wa Rasse.

Because the beach lies along a walking route connecting several of Aomori’s major waterfront attractions, it is easy to stop by while exploring the area. Visitors can combine a walk along the shore with sightseeing, shopping, dining, and cultural experiences nearby.

The beach is also an inviting place simply to take a break. After visiting museums or walking around the waterfront, visitors can sit near the sand and enjoy the open view of the bay.

A Waterfront Space for Events Throughout the Year

Aomori Station Beach is used for various events throughout the year in cooperation with the adjacent Wa Rasse West Plaza.

These events provide opportunities for residents and visitors to meet and enjoy the waterfront together. At the same time, the beach functions as an everyday recreational space where people can relax and spend time beside the sea.

This combination of tourism, community activities, and ordinary daily use makes the beach an open and welcoming part of Aomori’s waterfront.

A Popular Photo Spot

During the summer season, a large “AOMORI” object is installed in the center of the sandy beach. Its bold lettering makes it a popular photo spot and a memorable way to capture your visit to the city.

Another distinctive photo opportunity can be found at the nearby Wa Rasse West Plaza. There, visitors can see “Bikkuri-ngo,” a large artwork inspired by the Fuji apple, one of the representative apple varieties grown in Aomori.

These playful installations add a colorful and contemporary touch to the waterfront and are particularly popular with visitors looking for unique travel photos.

Environmental Initiatives for the Future

Aomori Station Beach is designed not only as a tourist destination but also as a place where visitors can learn about the relationship between the city and its marine environment.

Beach-cleaning activities and seaweed-bed restoration projects are carried out on an ongoing basis, helping to support healthier coastal ecosystems.

The area is also involved in initiatives related to marine education and blue carbon. Blue carbon refers to carbon dioxide absorbed and stored by marine and coastal ecosystems such as seaweed beds and tidal wetlands.

These activities aim to balance the enjoyment and revitalization of the waterfront with consideration for the natural environment.

A New Landmark in Aomori’s Waterfront District

Aomori Station Beach offers an unusual combination of urban convenience and a relaxing seaside atmosphere. Just a few minutes from the train station, visitors can leave the busy streets behind and enjoy the sand, sea, and open sky.

Its history as a restored waterfront space, seasonal events, distinctive photo installations, and environmental initiatives give the beach a character that goes beyond a conventional artificial beach.

When exploring the area around Aomori Station, consider taking a short break at Aomori Station Beach and enjoying this new waterfront landmark where the city’s history, community, tourism, and connection with the sea come together.
