Japanese Sake “Tsugaru Peninsula”

A Bold, Dry Local Sake Made with Purely Aomori Ingredients

Tsugaru Peninsula is a distinctive local Japanese sake named after one of the best-known peninsulas in Aomori Prefecture. With its bold, dry character and ingredients sourced entirely from Aomori, it was created as a sake that expresses the strength and character of the northern land.

Created as a Truly Local Aomori Sake

In the spring of 2009, five sake retailers in Aomori City came together with the goal of promoting local production and local consumption. Their project led to the creation and release of Tsugaru Peninsula as a junmai ginjo sake representing Aomori’s local brewing culture.

The sake uses Hanaomoi, a sake-brewing rice variety developed in Aomori Prefecture, together with pure underground water from the Shirakami Mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage area. Brewing is carried out by a Tsugaru Tōji, a master brewer associated with the traditional brewing culture of the Tsugaru region.

Brewed by a Historic Sake Brewery

Tsugaru Peninsula is brewed by Ozaki Shuzō in Ajigasawa, on Aomori’s western coast. The brewery was established in 1860 and has a long history of sake making in the region.

With Aomori-grown sake rice, water from the Shirakami Mountains, and traditional local brewing expertise, the sake can truly be described as a “pure Aomori” sake.

Rich Rice Flavor Followed by a Distinctive Dry Finish

When first tasted, Tsugaru Peninsula offers an elegant and fragrant aroma. A rich, substantial flavor of rice spreads across the palate, followed by a pronounced dry finish.

Its full-bodied character and clean finish give it a strong presence, making it quite different from lighter, sweeter styles of sake. The combination of rich umami and crisp dryness creates a satisfying drinking experience.

The Spirit of Northern Aomori

The character of Tsugaru Peninsula is closely connected to its name. The Tsugaru Peninsula faces the rough waters of the Sea of Japan, and the sake’s powerful flavor evokes the rugged northern landscape shaped by wind, waves, and a cool climate.

Its bold personality makes it an appealing sake for those who want to experience a more robust side of Japanese sake culture.

A Rare Limited-Distribution Sake

Tsugaru Peninsula is a particularly rare sake because it is sold exclusively through “Team Five,” a group of five sake shops in Aomori City. Its limited distribution makes it a special product for visitors interested in discovering locally produced Japanese sake that is closely connected to the community.

For travelers exploring Aomori, Tsugaru Peninsula offers more than a drink. It is a taste of the region’s rice, mountain water, traditional brewing skills, and northern landscape, brought together in a single bottle.
