Lake Bannryuko

A Mysterious Lake Shaped by Nature and History

Lake Bannryuko is a beautiful freshwater lake set among the hills to the west of Masuda City, Shimane Prefecture. Its distinctive name comes from the intricate shape of its shoreline, which is said to resemble a dragon coiled around itself.

Surrounded by forests and calm waters, the lake offers a peaceful escape where visitors can enjoy the beauty and tranquility of nature. The quiet atmosphere and unusual landscape give Bannryuko a mysterious charm that makes it an appealing destination for travelers exploring the Masuda area.

A Natural Lake Created by a Unique Landscape

Lake Bannryuko was formed through a remarkable natural process. Sand carried inland by the prevailing westerly winds from the Sea of Japan gradually accumulated and formed sand dunes. Over a long period of time, these dunes blocked the outlet of a valley, creating what is known as a barrier lagoon lake.

This unusual formation is an excellent example of the powerful forces that shape coastal landscapes and is considered geologically valuable.

The lake consists of two sections: Upper Lake on the western side and Lower Lake on the eastern side. The total area is approximately 13 hectares, and the maximum depth is around 10 meters.

The shoreline curves and bends in many places, creating different views depending on where you stand. This constantly changing perspective is one of the distinctive features of Bannryuko.

A Rich Natural Environment and Ecosystem

The lake provides habitat for freshwater fish such as carp, crucian carp, eels, and catfish. Aquatic plants, including water shield and bladderwort, can also be found around the water’s edge.

In recent years, the introduction of largemouth bass has also affected the fish ecosystem. This has brought attention to the importance of preserving the lake’s natural environment and maintaining its native biodiversity.

Forests of Japanese black pine surround the lake, creating beautiful scenery throughout the year.

Spring brings fresh green leaves, while summer is filled with deep greenery. In autumn, colorful foliage adds warm tones to the landscape, and winter brings a quiet atmosphere as the area becomes wrapped in stillness.

Walking, Boating, and Outdoor Recreation

Well-maintained walking paths run around Lake Bannryuko, allowing visitors to explore both Upper Lake and Lower Lake on foot.

A leisurely walk beside the water is a wonderful way to appreciate the changing scenery while enjoying a break from the pace of everyday life.

Rental boats are also available, offering a different perspective on the lake. Drifting quietly across the calm surface allows visitors to observe the surrounding landscape from the water and experience nature at close range.

Fishing is another popular activity. Together, walking, boating, and fishing make Bannryuko an easy-going destination for travelers who want to spend time outdoors.

A History of People Living Alongside Nature

The area around Bannryuko has a long history of human activity closely connected with the natural environment.

During the Hōei era, from 1704 to 1711, Nagamine Kazauemon of Takatsu Village spent many years working to complete an underground waterway approximately 200 meters long.

This irrigation project brought water to surrounding farmland and helped transform the area into productive agricultural fields.

The story offers an example of how local communities worked with the landscape and made use of its natural resources. It also reflects the long relationship between the people of the region and the water and land surrounding the lake.

Bannryuko Prefectural Natural Park

The area surrounding Lake Bannryuko is incorporated into Bannryuko Prefectural Natural Park, a recreational area centered on the lake’s distinctive landscape.

Kakinomoto Shrine and the Romance of the Manyoshu

Near the lake stands Kakinomoto Shrine, dedicated to Kakinomoto no Hitomaro, one of the most celebrated poets of Japan’s ancient Manyo period.

The shrine is traditionally believed to have been founded in 724 and has a long history as a place of worship.

Every year on September 1, the shrine holds the Hassaku Festival. Traditional ceremonies, including horseback archery, are performed as part of the festival, providing a glimpse into the region’s cultural heritage.

Manyo Park and the Manyo Botanical Garden

Nearby Shimane Prefectural Manyo Park offers another way to explore the area’s connection with ancient Japanese culture.

The park includes a Manyo Botanical Garden featuring plants mentioned in the Manyoshu, Japan’s oldest major anthology of poetry. There is also a Japanese-style outdoor music stage and a children’s recreation area.

Walking through the park allows visitors to enjoy both nature and Japanese cultural heritage, while learning how plants and landscapes were closely connected to poetry in ancient Japan.
