Yoshika Town (Shimane Prefecture)

A Mountain Village Where Nature and History Come Together

Yoshika Town is located in the southwestern part of Shimane Prefecture, at the southernmost edge of the prefecture. Surrounded by the mountains and forests of the western Chugoku Mountains, the town is blessed with rich natural scenery, clear streams, traditional culture, and a long history.

Yoshika covers an area of approximately 336.29 square kilometers, with much of the town covered by forest. Mountains reaching around 1,000 meters in elevation rise throughout the region, including Mount Anzōji, at 1,263 meters. These mountains create beautiful scenery that changes dramatically with the seasons.

The Takatsu River, a Class A river known as one of Japan’s clearest streams, flows from north to south through the town. The river has long supported local agriculture, daily life, and culture.

Yoshika has also historically served as an important transportation route connecting the San’in and San’yō regions. Its role as a crossroads has left a lasting influence on the town’s culture and landscape.

A Rich Natural Environment Between Two River Systems

Although Yoshika Town is located on the Sea of Japan side of Japan, its geography has an interesting connection with two different drainage systems.

Most of the town lies within the Takatsu River basin, whose waters eventually flow toward the Sea of Japan. Parts of the town, however, are connected to the Nishiki River system, which flows toward the Seto Inland Sea.

This geographical diversity is one of the distinctive characteristics of Yoshika and helps explain the variety of landscapes found throughout the town.

A Town Shaped by History and Transportation

During the Edo period, Yoshika was part of an area known as the Three Domains of Yoshika. The town also developed as a series of post towns along important routes connecting different parts of western Japan.

Although modern transportation has changed the way people travel, traces of this history remain in the area’s settlements, traditional landscapes, and cultural heritage.

Local Foods Nurtured by Pure Water and Fertile Soil

The clear water and fertile soil of Yoshika provide ideal conditions for agriculture. Local farmers produce a variety of high-quality crops, including rice, shiitake mushrooms, wasabi, and mini tomatoes.

Some agricultural products are also valued as organic produce. The connection between the mountains, clean water, and local agriculture can be experienced directly through the food produced in the region.

For visitors, tasting local agricultural products is an important part of discovering the character of Yoshika.

Ōitani Rice Terraces: A Glimpse of Traditional Japan

The Ōitani Rice Terraces are one of Yoshika’s most distinctive landscapes. The terraces are believed to have been developed approximately 600 years ago and have been selected as one of Japan’s 100 Best Rice Terrace Landscapes.

Small rice fields supported by traditional stone walls extend across the south-facing slopes, creating a beautiful agricultural landscape.

During the planting and harvesting seasons, visitors can see local farmers working among the terraces. The scene offers a glimpse of a traditional Japanese rural landscape that is increasingly difficult to find in urban areas.

Momidani Gorge: Dramatic Mountain Scenery

Momidani Gorge stretches from Kurobuchi to Momidani and is characterized by deep valleys and steep mountain slopes.

The gorge is formed from distinctive geological formations known as the Kanmon Group and Suzuriishi Formation, giving the area scientific as well as scenic value.

The fresh greenery of spring and the colorful foliage of autumn are particularly beautiful. The changing scenery provides an opportunity to experience the scale and power of the natural landscape.

Nagase Gorge: A Clear-Water Paradise

Located in the headwaters of Fukatani Gorge, Nagase Gorge is surrounded by mountains reaching approximately 1,000 meters in elevation.

Fresh greenery makes spring an attractive season for visiting, while autumn brings colorful foliage to the valley. In summer, visitors can enjoy playing in the river, including natural rock formations that can be used like water slides.

The combination of clear water, mountains, and outdoor activities makes the gorge particularly popular with families.

Hiratochi Waterfalls: Five Waterfalls in One Area

Hiratochi Falls is the collective name for five waterfalls in the area. Among them, Ōuokiri Falls is especially impressive, with a height of approximately 22 meters.

When the water level is low, the waterfall has an elegant and graceful appearance. After rainfall, however, the increased flow transforms it into a powerful and dramatic cascade.

Fukatani Bridge: A Red Arch Above the Gorge

Fukatani Bridge spans Fukatani Gorge with an arch-shaped structure approximately 99.5 meters long and 80 meters high.

The vivid red bridge stands out beautifully against the surrounding mountains and forests. Its appearance changes with the seasons, from fresh green foliage in spring and summer to colorful autumn leaves and the quiet winter landscape.

Katakuri no Sato: Delicate Spring Flowers

Katakuri no Sato is known for its colonies of katakuri, or dogtooth violets. In spring, these delicate flowers open in shades of pale purple and pink, creating a beautiful seasonal landscape.

The flowers usually bloom from late March to early April. During this period, the area hosts the Katakuri Festival, attracting visitors who come to enjoy the arrival of spring.

Shakunage no Sato: Rhododendrons in Bloom

In early May, Shakunage no Sato becomes a colorful floral destination as approximately 60-year-old rhododendrons bloom throughout the area.

The flowers bring a vibrant touch of color to the mountain village and provide another opportunity to enjoy Yoshika’s changing seasons.

Miroku Park and Its Weeping Cherry Tree

Located on a small hill, Miroku Park is known for its beautiful weeping cherry tree. From the park, visitors can also enjoy views across the surrounding town and mountains.

The combination of cherry blossoms, traditional rural scenery, and mountain views makes the park a pleasant place for a springtime visit.

Suigen Hall and Suigen Park: Discover the Source of the Takatsu River

Suigen Hall is located near the source of the Takatsu River and is housed in an attractive wooden building. The facility introduces the relationship between water, people, and the natural environment.

The nearby Suigen Park includes Ojakagaike Pond, which has been selected among Japan’s 100 Remarkable Waters, as well as a giant Japanese cedar said to be more than 1,000 years old.

The combination of clear mountain water, ancient trees, and deep forest creates a quiet and almost sacred atmosphere.

A Natural Forest of Japanese Umbrella Pines

In the Ariida area of Yoshika, a natural forest of Japanese umbrella pine extends across approximately 70 hectares.

The extensive woodland provides an impressive example of the region’s natural environment and is carefully protected as one of the symbols of Yoshika Town.

Relax in Yoshika’s Hot Springs

Muikaichi Onsen Yu-ra-ra

Muikaichi Onsen Yu-ra-ra is a popular hot spring facility located beside the Takatsu River. The facility uses abundant naturally flowing hot spring water and features both large communal baths and open-air baths.

Surrounded by nature, it is an ideal place to relax after hiking, sightseeing, or exploring the mountain landscapes of Yoshika.

Kakinoki Onsen and Kibetani Onsen

Kakinoki Onsen and Kibetani Onsen are known for their natural hot spring water, used without adding water or chemical disinfectants.

Kibetani Onsen is particularly unusual because it is famous for its intermittent spring. Approximately every 25 minutes, hot spring water naturally erupts from the ground, creating a fascinating natural phenomenon.

Outdoor and Cultural Facilities

Hiratochi Falls Forest Park

Hiratochi Falls Forest Park features walking paths connecting the five waterfalls. Visitors can enjoy forest bathing and nature walks while exploring the surrounding woodland and waterfalls.

Ōnonohara Sports and Community Plaza

Ōnonohara Sports and Community Plaza is a multipurpose sports facility with amenities including tennis courts and a golf practice area. It offers visitors a chance to enjoy outdoor recreation while surrounded by Yoshika’s natural scenery.

Natsume no Sato Community Center

Natsume no Sato Community Center was created by renovating a former elementary school. It can be used as an accommodation facility as well as a venue for training programs, camps, and community events.

The town’s connection with the Takatsu River is particularly important. From its headwaters in the mountains to the rice terraces and farmland downstream, water has shaped both the landscape and the lives of local communities.
