Decchi Yokan (Mie Prefecture)

A Refreshingly Light Japanese Sweet with a Smooth, Silky Texture

Decchi Yokan is a traditional Japanese confectionery that has been cherished for generations in Iga, Mie Prefecture. One of the local shops known for this specialty is Kogetsudo, a long-established Japanese confectionery store that has been serving the castle town since the Meiji period (1868–1912), with a history spanning well over a century.

A Lighter Alternative to Traditional Yokan

Kogetsudo’s Decchi Yokan is made with a generous amount of kudzu starch from Yoshino, Nara Prefecture. Compared with ordinary yokan, a firm jelly-like sweet made from red bean paste, sugar, and a setting agent, this version contains more moisture and has a wonderfully smooth texture that slides easily down the throat. Its consistency is reminiscent of mizu yokan, a softer, water-rich variety of the traditional confection.

The natural flavor of red beans comes through beautifully, while the restrained sweetness leaves a clean, refreshing finish. It is easy to enjoy without feeling overly rich, making it popular with both women and men.

Traditional Craftsmanship and Seasonal Flavors

Kogetsudo remains committed to traditional handmade production and does not use synthetic additives. In autumn, the shop also offers Kuri Decchi Yokan, a seasonal variation featuring chestnuts that adds a pleasant, earthy sweetness to this classic Iga treat.

For visitors exploring Iga’s historic streets and cultural attractions, Decchi Yokan is a lovely way to discover the area’s long-standing Japanese confectionery tradition.
