Meibutsu Mimuro Monaka

A Traditional Japanese Sweet with a History Spanning More Than a Century

Meibutsu Mimuro is a celebrated Japanese confectionery known for its fragrant azuki red bean filling and crisp, aromatic wafer shell. Its traditional recipe has been passed down since the Kōka era (1844–1848), preserving a distinctive flavor that has delighted generations of sweet lovers.

The confection is made by Shiratamaya Eiju, a long-established confectionery shop. Its name, Mimuro, comes from Mount Mimuro, the sacred mountain regarded as the divine body of Ōmiwa Shrine, whose deity has long been revered as the shop’s guardian deity. This connection to the spiritual traditions of the region gives the sweet a special place in local culture.

Yamato Dainagon Azuki Beans and a Distinctive Filling

The heart of Meibutsu Mimuro is its filling, made with Yamato Dainagon azuki beans, a regional specialty associated with the Uda area of Nara Prefecture. The beans provide a delicate sweetness and rich, natural aroma that pair beautifully with the toasted fragrance and crisp texture of the wafer shell.

One of the confection’s defining features is its kanoko-an filling. Smooth red bean paste and chunky red bean paste are cooked separately in different kettles before being blended together. This careful method creates a pleasing combination of textures while allowing the characteristic flavor of the azuki beans to shine through.

A Beloved Sweet from Nara’s Historic Trade Routes

Meibutsu Mimuro became well known among travelers and residents of the post towns along the historic Yamato Kaidō route. Its carefully prepared filling helped preserve its flavor over time, making it a popular confection in an era when travelers needed sweets that could be carried on a journey.

The sweet is available in two sizes, large and small, and both can be purchased individually. With its restrained sweetness, fragrant red bean filling, and crisp shell, Meibutsu Mimuro offers a wonderful introduction to Nara’s traditional confectionery culture and makes an appealing treat or souvenir for visitors exploring the Asuka and Kashihara area.
