Soni Kogen Beer

Craft Beer Brewed with Pristine Spring Water and Traditional German Expertise

Soni Kogen Beer is a craft beer produced in Soni Village, a peaceful mountain village in Nara Prefecture. Surrounded by beautiful natural landscapes, the village is famous for Soni Kogen, a vast plateau covered in Japanese pampas grass. In autumn, the golden grass sways in the wind, glowing in the setting sun and creating one of the area’s most spectacular seasonal scenes.

Inspired by the richness of this natural environment, Soni Kogen Beer is known for its full-bodied flavor and refreshing drinkability. It was first brewed in 1999 at Mugi no Yakata, a brewery located within Soni Kogen Farm Garden. It is one of the oldest surviving craft beer breweries in Nara Prefecture.

Pure Water and Authentic German Brewing Techniques

One of the secrets behind the beer’s distinctive character is the exceptionally pure spring water drawn from the surrounding highlands. Known as the Soni Kogen Spring Water Group, this water is extremely soft and has been selected as one of Japan’s Heisei Era 100 Remarkable Waters by the Ministry of the Environment. Local legends tell of a giant serpent appearing near the springs, adding a touch of mystery to the area’s natural heritage.

The beer is brewed using techniques passed down by German master brewers, known as Braumeisters. Its ingredients are deliberately simple: malt, hops, and the renowned local spring water. No additional ingredients are used, allowing the natural flavors of the malt and hops to take center stage.

Soni Kogen Beer is traditionally brewed as an unpasteurized, unfiltered beer. Because it is neither heat-treated nor filtered, the yeast remains in the beer, preserving its distinctive character and rich flavor. The result is a beer that combines the satisfying taste of malt with a clean, smooth finish.

Three Signature Varieties

Kogen Pilsner is a pale golden beer with a mellow, smooth taste. Its clean finish makes it an easy-drinking choice for those who enjoy a refreshing, classic lager-style beer.

Byobu Kölsch offers a fresh, appealing aroma accompanied by a gentle bitterness. Its crisp character makes it an excellent option for drinkers who prefer a lighter, aromatic beer.

Yoroi Alt is a reddish-brown beer with the rich flavor and depth often associated with dark beer. Its layered aroma and fuller taste provide a satisfying alternative to the lighter varieties.

A Taste of Soni Village

Each variety reflects the brewery’s commitment to traditional brewing methods and carefully selected natural ingredients. Whether you prefer the mellow character of a pilsner, the refreshing aroma of a Kölsch, or the deeper flavor of an altbier, Soni Kogen Beer offers a distinctive taste of Nara’s mountain countryside.

When exploring Soni Village, consider visiting Soni Kogen Farm Garden to discover the local beer and experience the area’s natural surroundings. In autumn, the nearby pampas grass plateau is especially beautiful, making it an ideal destination for travelers seeking both scenic landscapes and regional food and drink.
