Godo Station (Watarase Keikoku Railway)

A Scenic Gateway to Azuma, Midori City, Framed by Peach Blossoms and Railway Heritage

Gōdo Station is a station on the Watarase Keikoku Line of the Watarase Keikoku Railway, located in Gōdo, Azuma, Midori City, Gunma Prefecture. The station is numbered WK12.

Among the stations along the railway route, which follows the historic railway corridor associated with the Ashio Copper Mine, Gōdo Station is particularly popular with visitors. In spring, approximately 300 flowering peach trees create a spectacular display, while throughout the year the station’s nostalgic wooden building and the surrounding mountain scenery offer a glimpse of old-fashioned railway travel.

A Spectacular Spring Landscape of Flowering Peaches and Cherry Blossoms

Gōdo Station is famous for its approximately 300 flowering peach trees. From around late March to early April each year, flowers in various shades of pink fill the station grounds, creating a scene reminiscent of a tunnel of blossoms.

When the timing coincides with the cherry blossom season, the combination of flowering peach trees, cherry blossoms, and passing trains creates an especially beautiful landscape.

The relaxed pace of this local railway makes it an ideal place to enjoy a leisurely walk or take photographs while experiencing the arrival of spring. The annual Gōdo Station Hanamomo Festival also attracts many visitors, filling the area around the station with a festive atmosphere.

A Historic Wooden Station Building and Registered Cultural Property

Gōdo Station opened in 1912 as a station on the Ashio Railway. The original wooden station building constructed at the time of its opening is still in use today.

Although the building has undergone additions and renovations over the years, it retains much of its historic character. The station building, platforms, and waiting area are registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties of Japan.

In 2016, the station was also recognized as part of the Japan Society of Civil Engineers’ Selected Heritage of Civil Engineering as part of the group of facilities associated with the Watarase Keikoku Railway.

As one of the few stations that preserve the atmosphere of the railway from the early days of the Ashio Railway, Gōdo Station has considerable historical and cultural significance.

The station is currently unattended, but local residents participate as volunteer station managers, helping create a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

The Starting Point of a Steep Railway Section

The approximately 6-kilometer section between Gōdo Station and Sōri Station includes some of the steepest gradients along the railway line. The train climbs a difference in elevation roughly equivalent to the approximately 140-meter height of Kusaki Dam, passing through the Kusaki Tunnel along the way.

During the era when C12-class steam locomotives operated on the line, two locomotives were sometimes coupled together to provide additional power for the steep section ahead. Gōdo Station served as an important base for these operations.

Today, diesel railcars travel quietly along the route, but the station still retains an atmosphere that evokes the history of railway operations in the mountains.

Seiryū: A Restaurant Inside a Former Express Train

One of the highlights of Gōdo Station is the railway restaurant Seiryū, located within the station grounds.

The restaurant uses a former 1720 Series Deluxe Romance Car that once operated as the limited express Kegon on the Tōbu Nikkō Line.

The interior retains much of the original seating and décor, allowing diners to enjoy their meal in an atmosphere reminiscent of traveling aboard a classic Japanese express train.

Being able to enjoy a meal while watching trains arrive and depart makes this a popular experience not only among railway enthusiasts but also among general visitors.

Local Railway Bento Boxes

Gōdo Station also offers several popular railway bento boxes featuring flavors associated with the area.

Yamato Pork Bento features flavorful Yamato pork prepared with a special soy-based sauce. The wrapping paper includes a guide to attractions along the railway line, and the bento comes with a specially designed Japanese hand towel, adding a playful souvenir element.

Trolley Train Bento is a traditional makunouchi-style boxed meal featuring locally produced maitake mushrooms. The meal includes maitake mushroom mixed rice and tempura, while its trolley-train-themed packaging adds to the feeling of a railway journey.

Combining Gōdo Station with Nearby Attractions

Several popular attractions can be visited around Gōdo Station, including Kusaki Dam, Kusaki Lake, and the Tomihiro Museum, operated by Midori City and dedicated to the works of poet and artist Tomihiro Hoshino.

The Tomihiro Museum can be reached in approximately 10 minutes by municipal bus.

Other nearby attractions include the Children’s Songs Furusato Museum, which displays materials related to children’s song lyricist Wasaburō Ishihara, and Sunlake Kusaki, a lakeside accommodation facility.

With its convenient connections to these attractions, Gōdo Station serves as an important gateway for exploring the Azuma area.

A Nostalgic Location for Films and Commercials

Because of its nostalgic scenery, Gōdo Station has also been used as a location for films and television commercials.

The combination of the historic wooden station building, railway platforms, and colorful flowering peach trees creates a distinctive landscape with a timeless atmosphere, making it an appealing setting for visual productions.

A Railway Station with Many Faces

Gōdo Station is much more than a railway stop. It brings together a famous flowering-peach viewing spot, historic architecture, railway heritage, and access to the natural and cultural attractions of Azuma.

In spring, visitors can admire the flowering peach trees and cherry blossoms, while throughout the year they can enjoy trains traveling through the mountain valleys, the nostalgic wooden station building, and the unique experience of dining inside a former express train.

When exploring eastern Midori City, consider getting off at Gōdo Station and taking some time to enjoy the slower pace and nostalgic atmosphere of this remarkable local railway destination.
