Takatsudo Gorge

A Spectacular Gorge Shaped by the Watarase River

Takatsudo Gorge is a scenic gorge located in Takatsudo, Ōmama Town, Midori City, Gunma Prefecture. Created over countless years by the Watarase River as it carved its way through the mountains, the gorge is one of the most celebrated scenic spots along the middle reaches of the river.

Known as the “Yabakei of the Kanto region” because of its dramatic rock formations and beautiful natural scenery, Takatsudo Gorge is regarded as one of the area’s notable scenic destinations, alongside Agatsuma Gorge in northwestern Gunma.

The landscape changes beautifully with the seasons. Fresh green foliage brightens the gorge from spring into summer, while the surrounding mountains turn vivid shades of red and gold in autumn. The autumn foliage season, particularly from late October to early November, attracts many visitors, transforming the gorge into a colorful natural panorama.

Explore the Gorge Along a 500-Meter Walking Trail

A walking trail extends for approximately 500 meters along the left bank of the Watarase River between Takatsudo Bridge and Hanetaki Bridge.

The trail has gentle ups and downs and allows visitors to enjoy the sheer rock walls, flowing river, and sounds of the stream at close range. The walk takes approximately 30 minutes at a leisurely pace, making it an easy way to experience the natural beauty of the gorge.

The views from the bridges are particularly impressive. From Hanetaki Bridge, visitors can look out over the river, exposed rock formations, and surrounding mountains. The bridge has become one of the symbols of Takatsudo Gorge and is also a popular spot for photography.

Unusual Rocks and Natural Sculptures

Takatsudo Gorge features numerous unusual rock formations and geological features created by the forces of nature over thousands of years.

One of the best-known formations is Gorilla Rock, whose shape resembles the profile of a gorilla when viewed from a particular angle.

Another distinctive feature is the series of potholes, known in Japanese as ōketsu. These rounded holes were formed as water and stones gradually eroded the bedrock.

Other points of interest include Isega-fuchi, Hanetaki Waterfall, and the more recently named Skeleton Rock. Each provides a different example of the natural forces that have shaped the gorge.

A Scenic Landscape Celebrated in History and Art

The beauty of Takatsudo Gorge has been recognized for centuries. In 1831, the painter Watanabe Kazan visited the area and recorded his impressions in his travel account Mōbu Yūki.

In 1941, the renowned woodblock print artist Kawase Hasui created a work titled “Jōshū Takatsudo”, capturing the quiet yet powerful character of the gorge.

The fact that artists have repeatedly been drawn to this landscape reflects the enduring appeal of its combination of dramatic rocks, flowing water, and mountain scenery.

Nearby Historic and Cultural Attractions

The area around the gorge also contains several historic sites. Ōmama Shinmeigū Shrine, built on a rocky headland overlooking Isega-fuchi, has long been worshipped as a guardian shrine of the local community.

Visitors can also explore the remains of Takatsudo Castle, a former mountain stronghold constructed in a strategically advantageous location overlooking the surrounding area.

The walking route that includes Takatsudo Gorge has also been selected as one of the 500 Beautiful Japanese Walking Trails, recognizing the appeal of the area’s natural and cultural landscape.

Convenient Access from Nearby Stations

Takatsudo Gorge is also easy to reach by public transportation. It is approximately a 5–8-minute walk from Ōmama Station on the Watarase Keikoku Railway.

It is also approximately a 20-minute walk from Akagi Station, served by the Jōmō Line and Tōbu Kiryū Line.

Because the gorge can be reached on foot from the stations, it is particularly convenient for travelers exploring Gunma by train and looking for an easy nature excursion.

A Scenic Destination to Enjoy in Every Season

Created by the Watarase River flowing down from the Ashio Mountains, Takatsudo Gorge offers an impressive combination of dramatic geological formations and delicate natural beauty.

Fresh spring foliage, clear summer waters, brilliant autumn colors, and the crisp winter landscape each reveal a different character of the gorge.

Known as the “Yabakei of the Kanto region,” Takatsudo Gorge is a place where visitors can experience the power of nature while enjoying a peaceful walk along the river.

When visiting Midori City, take time to walk through Takatsudo Gorge and experience its distinctive rock formations, seasonal scenery, and tranquil atmosphere.
