Hekigyokukei Gorge (Ohara Valley)

A Scenic Valley of Clear Water and Autumn Colors

Hekigyokukei Gorge is a beautiful valley carved by the Shiroishi River in the western part of Shiroishi City, Miyagi Prefecture. It is also known as Ohara Valley, after the name of the surrounding area.

The gorge is famous for its beautiful natural scenery, which changes with the seasons. Fresh greenery brightens the valley in spring, deep green forests surround the clear stream in summer, and brilliant autumn foliage covers the mountainsides in fall. In winter, snow creates a peaceful and atmospheric landscape.

Among all four seasons, autumn is particularly popular. The colorful leaves reflected on the clear waters of the Shiroishi River create a scene that looks almost like a painting, attracting visitors and photographers from both within and outside the city.

The Origin of the Name Hekigyokukei

The name “Hekigyokukei” is said to have been given by Shoho Tokutomi, a prominent Japanese writer and journalist of the Meiji period.

When Tokutomi visited the area, he was impressed by the gorge’s clear blue-green stream and its jewel-like beauty. He is said to have described the landscape as “Hekigyokukei,” meaning a valley of blue-green jade, in one of his poems.

There is also an interesting connection between the name and Shiroishi. The Japanese character “碧”, meaning blue-green or jade-colored, can be interpreted by separating its components as “Shiroishi” and “King.” This is said to be one of the reasons Tokutomi had a particular fondness for the area.

The Scenery and Natural Beauty of the Gorge

Hekigyokukei stretches along National Route 113, near the historic Ohara Onsen hot spring area. The combination of the clear river, steep valley walls, forests, and seasonal vegetation creates a picturesque landscape that can be enjoyed throughout the year.

Spring: Fresh Greenery

In spring, new leaves emerge across the mountains and the gorge takes on a bright, refreshing appearance. The vibrant greenery surrounding the clear river makes this an attractive season for walking and enjoying the peaceful natural environment.

Summer: Clear Streams and Deep Green Forests

During summer, the valley is surrounded by lush green vegetation. The sound of the flowing Shiroishi River and the cool atmosphere along the water provide a refreshing escape from the heat.

Autumn: A Valley of Brilliant Foliage

Autumn is the most spectacular season at Hekigyokukei. The surrounding trees turn shades of yellow, orange, and red, while their colors are reflected on the surface of the Shiroishi River.

The combination of colorful leaves, emerald-green water, and rugged valley scenery creates one of the area’s most memorable seasonal landscapes. It is an especially attractive destination for photographers.

Winter: A Quiet Snowy Landscape

When snow covers the surrounding mountains and forest, Hekigyokukei takes on a completely different character. The quiet winter scenery provides a beautiful contrast to the vibrant colors of autumn.

A Scenic Walk Along the River

One of the best ways to experience Hekigyokukei is to follow the walking trail along the river.

From the parking area, visitors can walk toward the river and eventually reach a distinctive red suspension bridge. The bridge provides an excellent viewpoint over the gorge and is particularly beautiful during the autumn foliage season.

The Red Suspension Bridge

Standing on the suspension bridge, visitors can look down toward the emerald-green water while colorful autumn leaves surround the valley. The reflection of the foliage on the river creates a spectacular scene and is one of the most popular photo opportunities in the area.

From the bridge, continuing along the trail allows visitors to explore more of the gorge. The sound of the flowing river, the surrounding trees, and the rugged natural landscape make the walk a relaxing way to experience Miyagi’s countryside.

Ohara Onsen and Day-Trip Hot Springs

Just a short distance from Hekigyokukei is the historic Ohara Onsen hot spring resort. Combining a walk through the gorge with a relaxing soak in the hot springs is one of the best ways to enjoy the area.

The hot spring water is classified as both a simple spring and a saline Glauber’s salt spring, with source temperatures ranging from approximately 47°C to 67°C.

Ohara Onsen has traditionally been associated with eye health, giving rise to the local saying “Eyes to Ohara,” reflecting the belief that bathing in the spring is beneficial for the eyes.

Katsura-no-Yu Day-Use Bath

There are two accommodation facilities in the Ohara Onsen area, while the municipal Katsura-no-Yu is a popular option for visitors looking for a day-use hot spring experience.

The bath is located beneath a natural rock ledge and offers free-flowing hot spring water. After walking through the gorge, soaking in the warm water provides a relaxing way to rest and enjoy the natural surroundings.

Enjoy the Gorge and Hot Springs Together

A visit to Hekigyokukei does not have to end after the walk. Spending time at Ohara Onsen afterward allows travelers to combine nature sightseeing and traditional Japanese hot spring culture in a single trip.

The experience can be especially memorable during the autumn foliage season or in winter, when the surrounding landscape takes on its seasonal colors while visitors relax in the warm spring water.
