Relaxation Surrounded by History and Nature

Togatta Onsen is a historic hot spring resort located in Zao Town, Katta District, Miyagi Prefecture. With a history of more than 400 years, the hot spring town has long welcomed visitors seeking relaxation amid the beautiful natural surroundings of the Zao Mountains.

Located at an elevation of approximately 330 meters, the resort spreads across a scenic highland area. Each season brings a different atmosphere, from fresh green foliage in spring and cool mountain scenery in summer to colorful autumn leaves and snowy winter landscapes.

Walking through the town, visitors can see traditional wooden inns, small shops, and workshops associated with the local kokeshi doll tradition. The streets retain the atmosphere of an old Japanese hot spring and therapeutic bathing resort, making a stroll through the town part of the experience.

Enjoy the Beauty of Zao Throughout the Four Seasons

Togatta Onsen is situated at the foot of the Zao Mountain Range, one of the most scenic mountain areas in the Tohoku region. The surrounding landscape changes dramatically with the seasons.

In spring, fresh green leaves brighten the mountains, while summer offers refreshing highland scenery. Autumn brings brilliant foliage, and winter transforms the area into a peaceful snow-covered landscape. The combination of hot springs and seasonal scenery makes Togatta Onsen an attractive destination at any time of year.

The History and Legends of Togatta Onsen

The origins of Togatta Onsen are believed to date back to the Keicho period in the early 17th century. Several legends are associated with the discovery of the hot spring.

According to one tradition, a man known as Kanekuri Kichiji, who is said to have made his fortune after discovering gold at Mount Iwasaki, found a naturally flowing hot spring in this area.

Another colorful legend tells of a giant eel that lived near Fudo Falls. The eel is said to have fought a giant crab at Sankai Falls and lost the battle. Its severed tail supposedly floated downstream to the area that later became Togatta Onsen, bringing with it miraculous powers believed to help ailments affecting the legs and lower back.

The area was once known as Yukatta and developed as a base for pilgrims climbing the Zao Mountains for religious worship. During the Edo period, it flourished as a lodging area for people traveling to worship at Katta Mine Shrine, historically associated with Zao Gongen. It also served as an important destination for toji, the traditional Japanese practice of extended stays at hot spring resorts for rest and recuperation.

The Hot Spring Water

The hot spring water at Togatta Onsen is classified as a sodium-calcium sulfate-chloride spring. Traditionally, the water has been associated with relief from conditions such as neuralgia, rheumatism, digestive disorders, women’s health conditions, and chronic skin problems.

It has also long been considered particularly beneficial for discomfort affecting the legs and lower back, which contributed to Togatta’s reputation as a therapeutic bathing destination.

The source temperature is approximately 68°C, making the water quite hot when it emerges from the ground. Hot spring water is supplied to local inns and public bathhouses, where visitors can enjoy the distinctive character of Togatta’s thermal waters.

Public Bathhouses in the Heart of the Town

The central area of Togatta Onsen is centered around Katta Mine Shrine’s Satomiya. Inns, hotels, souvenir shops, restaurants, and traditional public bathhouses are gathered around the streets, creating a lively yet nostalgic atmosphere.

The public baths are particularly appealing to visitors who want to experience a more traditional side of Japanese hot spring culture alongside local residents.

Kaminoyu Public Bathhouse

Kaminoyu is one of Togatta Onsen’s best-known public bathhouses. Visitors can enjoy naturally flowing hot spring water and experience the traditional atmosphere of a Japanese communal bath.

Both the men’s and women’s bathing areas have two baths with different temperatures, allowing guests to choose between hot and relatively cooler water. The facility is also located alongside a tourist information center and a footbath, making it an important gathering point in the hot spring town.

Kotobukiyu Public Bathhouse

Kotobukiyu is another traditional public bathhouse in Togatta Onsen. Its building recreates the atmosphere of an Edo-period hot spring bathhouse and was constructed using traditional techniques by skilled Japanese shrine and temple carpenters.

The building itself is part of the attraction, allowing visitors to enjoy a sense of old Japan while bathing in naturally flowing hot spring water. The relatively hot water is especially welcome after exploring the surrounding mountains and town.

Relax at a Footbath

For travelers who do not have time for a full bath, the free footbath next to Kaminoyu provides an easy way to experience Togatta’s hot spring culture.

The stepped footbath has areas with different water temperatures, so visitors can choose a comfortable spot and relax while taking a break from walking around the town.

Togatta Onsen and Traditional Kokeshi Dolls

Togatta Onsen is also famous as one of the traditional production areas for Japan’s three major kokeshi traditions. Kokeshi are simple wooden dolls traditionally made in the Tohoku region and are closely connected with local craftsmanship and hot spring culture.

Togatta-style kokeshi have distinctive decorative features. Their heads are traditionally decorated with red radial lines, while an inverted-V-shaped pattern is often drawn from the forehead toward the cheeks.

The bodies are decorated by hand with colorful floral motifs, including chrysanthemums and plum blossoms. Each doll reflects the skills and aesthetic sensibilities of the artisan who creates it.

For visitors from outside Japan, discovering these traditional wooden dolls provides an interesting way to understand the connection between hot spring resorts, local crafts, and everyday culture in northern Japan.

The Town’s History and Cultural Events

During the Edo period, organized groups of pilgrims frequently climbed Mount Zao to visit Katta Mine Shrine at the summit. Togatta Onsen prospered as a lodging town along these pilgrimage routes.

During the Taisho period, the Sennan Hot Spring Tramway opened, temporarily providing railway access to the area. The line was later discontinued in the early Showa period.

The hot spring town subsequently experienced fires and redevelopment before gradually taking on its present appearance. In 1997, Zao-dori Street was renovated, and the Daido-gei Festival in Togatta, featuring street performances and entertainment, was launched.

Today, Togatta has developed into a destination where visitors can enjoy not only hot springs but also traditional crafts, local culture, and the natural beauty of the Zao area.

Gateway to Miyagi Zao

Togatta Onsen is an excellent base for exploring Miyagi Zao. The surrounding area offers a wide range of attractions and outdoor activities, including the Zao Echo Line, the spectacular volcanic crater lake known as Okama, Zao Eboshi and Sumikawa ski resorts, and Zao Heartland, a popular ranch and tourist farm.

Different activities are available throughout the year. Winter is ideal for skiing and snow activities, while spring and summer are well suited to hiking, mountain sightseeing, and scenic drives. In autumn, the mountains become especially attractive as the foliage changes color.

A Traditional Hot Spring Escape in Miyagi

Togatta Onsen offers much more than a place to soak in hot spring water. Its historic streets, traditional public bathhouses, kokeshi craftsmanship, mountain scenery, and long connection with religious pilgrimage make it a fascinating destination for travelers interested in experiencing a quieter side of Japan.

After exploring the Zao Mountains, visitors can return to the town, warm themselves in a traditional bath, relax at a footbath, browse local crafts, and enjoy the atmosphere of an old Japanese hot spring resort.

For travelers exploring Miyagi, Togatta Onsen provides an opportunity to experience the region’s natural beauty, hot spring traditions, history, and local craftsmanship in one destination. A visit here can be a relaxing and memorable addition to a trip around Sendai and the Zao area.
