Itami Sky Park is a spacious public park in Itami, Hyogo Prefecture, stretching along the western side of Osaka International Airport, also known as Itami Airport. Located close to the runway, the park offers visitors an exciting opportunity to watch aircraft take off and land from remarkably close range. It is a popular destination for families, aviation enthusiasts, and photography lovers, and is an unusual place to experience the power and scale of commercial aircraft without entering an airport terminal.
The park was developed through cooperation between the national government, Hyogo Prefecture, and Itami City beginning in 1993. Part of the park opened to the public on July 9, 2006, followed by its full opening on July 12, 2008. Today, Itami Sky Park covers approximately nine hectares, providing an expansive outdoor space where visitors can enjoy both aviation and recreation.
Because the park runs alongside the airport runway, visitors can observe aircraft movements at close range. The sight of large passenger planes accelerating along the runway, lifting into the sky, or descending toward the airport is a memorable experience. The park is especially appealing to families with children, plane spotters, and photographers looking for excellent views of aircraft in action.
Itami Sky Park is divided into several areas featuring lawns, observation points, aviation-related displays, playground equipment, and water features. During the day, families and young visitors gather to enjoy the open spaces and watch the planes. In the evening, the park takes on a different atmosphere, attracting couples and visitors who come to admire the illuminated airport scenery while watching aircraft arrive and depart.
The park is also conveniently located near AEON Mall Itami, one of the largest shopping malls in the Kinki region. Visitors can combine an aviation-viewing outing with shopping or dining, and a pedestrian bridge connects the mall area with JR Itami Station.
Itami Sky Park has three main entrances: the North Entrance, Central Entrance, and South Entrance. Each provides access to different facilities and points of interest within the park.
Beside the southern side of Hyogo Prefectural and Osaka Prefectural Route 99, the North Entrance provides access to the Park Center. Exhibits inside introduce the area’s history and aviation, including archaeological finds from the nearby Iwaya Site, historical materials relating to the Kozu district, an air traffic control radar, and a propeller from the YS-11, Japan’s domestically developed turboprop airliner.
The Central Entrance is located just south of the Airport River. Here, visitors can see a reconstructed Yayoi-period irrigation facility excavated at the Iwaya Site, offering a glimpse into ancient agricultural life in the region. A plasma display also shows aircraft arrival and departure times at Osaka International Airport.
The South Entrance lies beyond Iwaya Tunnel, next to Skyland HARADA. It provides access to the Hilltop Parking Area, where visitors can remain in their cars while watching aircraft take off and land nearby. This is a convenient option for those who prefer to enjoy the views without leaving their vehicles.
Itami Sky Park quickly became a popular attraction after its partial opening. During the seven-month period from July 2006 to January 2007, approximately 280,000 people visited the park. Following its full opening in 2008, annual visitor numbers significantly exceeded initial expectations.
The park can become particularly busy on public holidays, when parking areas often fill up and drivers may have to wait for more than an hour. Visitor surveys conducted by Itami City found that 86% of respondents arrived by private car, while 80% came from outside Itami City. In addition, 51% had visited the park at least twice, demonstrating its popularity as a destination worth returning to.
Parking demand was already high during the park’s early period of operation. From July 2006 to January 2007, a total of 89,591 vehicles used the parking facilities, averaging 433 vehicles per day. The busiest day recorded 1,218 vehicles. With the original parking capacity of 194 spaces insufficient for the growing number of visitors, plans were made to add another 150 spaces as part of the park’s full development.
Itami Sky Park is generally open from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. On Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, it opens earlier, at 7:00 a.m. Admission to the park is free, although parking is subject to a fee.
Parking initially cost ¥100 per hour when the park opened in 2006. The rate was subsequently increased, reaching ¥100 per 20 minutes from September 1, 2009. As parking information and fees may change, visitors should check the latest details before travelling, especially when planning a visit on a busy holiday.
The park can be reached by public transportation or on foot from nearby stations. Visitors using an Itami City Bus or Hankyu Bus can get off at the Itami Sky Park / Kamisuko bus stop, which is close to the park.
From JR Itami Station, take an Itami City Bus from bus stop 6 on the Iwaya Loop route or the route bound for Osaka International Airport via Kozu. Alternatively, visitors can walk through the AEON Mall Itami area; the walk takes approximately 20 minutes.
From Hankyu Itami Station, visitors can take an Itami City Bus or Hankyu Bus. Walking via AEON Mall Itami takes approximately 30 minutes.
With its close-up aircraft views, spacious recreational areas, and convenient access to shopping, Itami Sky Park is an enjoyable destination for visitors of all ages. Whether you are interested in aviation, travelling with children, or simply looking for a distinctive outdoor experience near Osaka, the park offers a memorable way to watch the skies above Itami Airport.
