Kawaramachi Tsumairi Merchant Houses

A Historic Streetscape of Traditional Edo-Period Merchants’ Houses

Kawaramachi Tsumairi Merchant Houses is a historic district in Tamba-Sasayama City, Hyogo Prefecture, known for its well-preserved traditional streetscape. Located within the Sasayama Traditional Buildings Preservation District, the area centers on Kawaramachi and Ogawamachi, where rows of historic merchant houses evoke the atmosphere of a prosperous trading town during the Edo period (1603–1868).

Walking through this district offers visitors a glimpse into the history, architecture, and cultural heritage of Tamba-Sasayama. Traditional buildings, historic temples, and cultural museums make it an appealing destination for travelers interested in old Japanese towns and local craftsmanship.

Architectural Features of the Merchant Houses

The district is particularly noted for the merchant houses lining the historic Kyoto Road. Many feature a traditional architectural style known as tsumairi, in which the entrance is located on the gabled end of the building rather than along its long side. This distinctive design is characteristic of the Tamba region and contributes to the area’s unique appearance.

The streetscape preserves buildings dating from the Edo period through the modern era, allowing visitors to appreciate how traditional commercial architecture developed over time. In 2021, utility poles were removed from the streets, further improving the historic landscape and creating a clearer view of the traditional buildings.
