Tanba Sasayama Taisho Romantic Museum

A Historic Building with Taisho-Era Charm

Tanba Sasayama Taisho Roman Museum is a historic Western-style building in Tamba-Sasayama City, Hyogo Prefecture. Completed in 1923, during the Taisho era (1912–1926), it originally served as the former Sasayama Town Hall. Today, it is a popular tourist information and visitor center, offering a welcoming introduction to the history, culture, and local specialties of the castle town.

A Beautiful Example of Taisho-Era Architecture

The building is a single-story wooden structure designed in a Western architectural style, reflecting the distinctive atmosphere of the Taisho period, when Western influences were increasingly incorporated into Japanese design and everyday life. It covers approximately 544 square meters and has been designated an important landscape building by Tamba-Sasayama City in recognition of its architectural character and historical value.

The building ceased to function as the town hall in 1992 and reopened as the Taisho Roman Museum in 1993. Since then, it has served as a central base for exploring the historic castle town, allowing visitors to enjoy the atmosphere of an earlier era while discovering the region’s attractions.

Renovation and Improvements

Renovation work was carried out from June 12 to August 9, 2023, to improve the building’s comfort and convenience for visitors. The museum continues to combine its historic character with practical facilities for travelers exploring Tamba-Sasayama.

The building also houses Romantei, a restaurant serving dishes prepared with local ingredients. Guests can enjoy a relaxed meal while looking out over the garden and terrace, making it a pleasant stop during a walk around the historic town.

Discover the Building’s History

The museum preserves reminders of its former role as Sasayama Town Hall, including the original signboard from its days as a municipal office and explanatory displays. These historical details help visitors appreciate the building not only as a tourist facility but also as a surviving part of the town’s civic history.
