Cape Manzamo is one of the most spectacular scenic attractions in Onna Village, one of Okinawa’s best-known resort destinations. Located within the Okinawa Coast designated park, this dramatic coastal landscape combines towering cliffs, lush grassland, and the brilliant blue waters of the East China Sea.
The most famous feature is a rocky outcrop extending toward the sea in a shape that resembles an elephant’s trunk. Waves crash against the base of the approximately 20-meter-high cliffs, creating a powerful natural spectacle.
From the top of the cliffs, visitors can enjoy sweeping views across the remarkably clear waters of the East China Sea. The sea changes color depending on the depth, sunlight, and underwater terrain, creating layers of brilliant blue and green.
Looking directly down from the cliff, the clear water allows underwater rocks to be seen beneath the surface. If you look carefully, you may even spot fish swimming below. This combination of dramatic cliffs and exceptionally transparent water gives Manzamo a distinctive beauty that is difficult to experience elsewhere.
The top of the cliffs is covered by a broad expanse of natural grassland. Around the grassy area grows a community of coastal plants adapted to Okinawa’s warm maritime environment. This plant community has been designated a Place of Scenic Beauty by Okinawa Prefecture.
The contrast between the vivid green grassland and the deep blue sea creates one of Manzamo’s most memorable landscapes. Walking along the coastal area provides opportunities to appreciate both the dramatic geology of the cliffs and the diverse subtropical vegetation.
The name Manzamo has an interesting connection with the Ryukyu Kingdom. In the Okinawan language, the word “mo” refers to an open grassy area or meadow.
In 1726, King Shō Kei of the Ryukyu Kingdom visited this area and praised the broad grassland as a place spacious enough for “ten thousand people to sit.” This expression is believed to be the origin of the name Manzamo, reflecting the extraordinary openness of the landscape.
Manzamo is particularly attractive when the changing light transforms the sea and cliffs. Around sunrise and sunset, sunlight is reflected across the surface of the East China Sea, creating a dramatic and atmospheric landscape.
The location is also a popular photography spot. The distinctive elephant-shaped rock, sheer cliffs, green grassland, and brilliant ocean provide a series of striking views from different angles.
A walking route allows visitors to explore the area while taking in the scenery. The surrounding grassland supports a variety of coastal plants, and seasonal flowers add further color to the landscape.
The walk is relatively short, but the scenery changes continuously as you move along the coastline. The sound of waves below the cliffs and the wide horizon of the East China Sea create a strong sense of being surrounded by nature.
Because Manzamo is situated on high, exposed cliffs, visitors should take particular care near the edges. Stay on designated walking paths and avoid approaching unstable cliff edges. The coastal environment is also fragile, so visitors are encouraged to take their rubbish with them and avoid damaging plants or the surrounding landscape.
For the best experience, visiting during daylight hours makes it easier to appreciate the colors of the sea, the grassland, and the cliffs while also allowing you to walk around the area safely.
Cape Manzamo brings together many of the landscapes travelers associate with Okinawa: vivid blue tropical waters, dramatic limestone cliffs, green coastal vegetation, and a wide open sky. Its scenic beauty is complemented by a history that reaches back to the era of the Ryukyu Kingdom.
For visitors exploring Okinawa’s western coast, Manzamo is an ideal place to experience the meeting of Okinawa’s natural beauty and cultural history. Stand above the waves, look out across the East China Sea, and take in the remarkable landscape that has impressed visitors for centuries.
