Matsumoto Alps Park is a large urban park located on the hills in the northwestern part of Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture. Covering approximately 71 hectares at an elevation of around 800 meters, the park makes the most of the area’s rolling terrain, forests, open spaces, and spectacular mountain scenery.
From the park, visitors can look west toward the majestic Northern Alps and the Azumino Valley, while views to the east extend toward Utsukushigahara Highlands and Matsumoto city. The combination of expansive scenery and abundant nature makes the park a popular place for both local residents and visitors to relax and enjoy the outdoors.
With walking trails, children’s play areas, a small animal park, a museum, and an exciting alpine coaster, Matsumoto Alps Park offers something for a wide range of ages. It is also an excellent place to experience the changing seasons of the Japanese mountains.
Matsumoto Alps Park was established during the Showa period and has been expanded and improved in stages. A major expansion was carried out on the northern side during fiscal year 2007, increasing the total area to approximately 71 hectares.
The expansion introduced an eastern entrance parking area with space for approximately 466 vehicles, a service center, a traditional farmhouse experience and learning facility, and walking trails that preserve the natural character of the hillside.
Rather than flattening the terrain, the park makes use of the existing landscape. Forests, slopes, open lawns, and natural trails create a spacious environment where visitors can walk, play, observe wildlife, and simply enjoy the scenery.
One of the park’s most popular attractions is the Alps Dream Coaster, a bobsled-style ride that winds through the forest.
The entire course is approximately 995 meters long, consisting of a 630-meter downhill course and a 365-meter return section. Riders sit on individual sleds and control their descent as they race through the wooded landscape.
One of the most distinctive features is that riders remain on the sled and are carried back to the starting area after completing the downhill section. This makes it possible to enjoy the attraction without having to walk back uphill.
The coaster generally operates from March through December and is enjoyed by both children and adults. During busy periods, waiting times can become long.
A photo service is also available, allowing visitors to have photographs taken during the ride and purchase them using a barcode function on a mobile phone. For families and younger visitors, the Alps Dream Coaster is one of the park’s most memorable experiences.
The Museum of Mountains and Nature introduces the natural environment and mountain culture of Matsumoto and the surrounding region. It is a branch of Matsumoto City Museum and is particularly suited to visitors who want to understand the landscapes they see from the park.
The museum traces its origins to a mountain exhibition room established in the Matsumoto Memorial Hall in 1939. It became an independent institution known as the Alps Mountain Museum in 1975 and was later rebuilt as part of the development of Matsumoto Alps Park. The present museum opened in 2007.
Exhibits include mountaineering equipment, taxidermied animals, plant specimens, and materials related to the mountains. Together, they introduce the natural environment of the region as well as Matsumoto’s history as a mountain city.
The fifth floor of the museum contains an observation deck approximately 35.5 meters above the ground. Admission to the observation deck is free.
From this elevated viewpoint, visitors can enjoy broad views of the Northern Alps, Azumino, Utsukushigahara Highlands, and Matsumoto city. On clear days, the mountain panorama is particularly impressive, making the museum a useful viewpoint as well as an educational facility.
The Forest of Small Birds and Animals is a small zoo established to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Matsumoto’s incorporation as a city.
Animals kept here include monkeys, foxes, and raccoon dogs, along with small birds such as parakeets. The sounds of birds and the presence of animals create a relaxing atmosphere within the surrounding greenery.
Although the facility is relatively small, its natural setting makes it particularly appealing to families with children. It offers young visitors an easy introduction to animals while allowing them to enjoy the wider landscape of the park at the same time.
One of the greatest attractions of Matsumoto Alps Park is that its appearance changes dramatically throughout the year.
In spring, cherry blossoms and fresh green foliage bring color to the hillsides. The combination of flowering trees and distant mountain peaks makes this a beautiful season for walking and picnicking.
During summer, the park is surrounded by deep green vegetation. Breezes moving through the trees provide a refreshing contrast to the warmer conditions in the city, making the forest trails pleasant for leisurely walks and nature observation.
In autumn, the hills are covered with brilliantly colored foliage. Walking through the park at this time of year offers constantly changing views as the leaves transform the surrounding forests.
Winter brings clear, crisp air and views of the snow-covered Northern Alps. The mountain scenery can appear especially dramatic against the clear winter sky.
Early morning and evening are also rewarding times to visit. As the sunlight changes, the colors of the sky and mountains shift from moment to moment, creating atmospheric views across the Matsumoto Basin.
Matsumoto Alps Park is designed not only for sightseeing but also for active recreation. Children can enjoy large slides, outdoor trampolines, and athletic playground equipment, while adults can explore the natural trails and open spaces.
The walking paths follow the natural contours of the hills and are suitable for leisurely hikes and nature observation. The extensive lawns provide space for picnics, outdoor games, and sports, making the park a popular everyday destination for local families.
For visitors traveling with children, the combination of playgrounds, animals, nature, and the Alps Dream Coaster makes it possible to spend several hours enjoying the park without needing to visit multiple destinations.
The scenery is one of the defining features of Matsumoto Alps Park. Looking west, visitors can see the dramatic peaks of the Northern Alps rising beyond the Azumino Valley.
Looking in the opposite direction, the landscape opens toward Utsukushigahara Highlands and Matsumoto city. The park’s elevated position makes it possible to appreciate the geography of the Matsumoto Basin and the surrounding mountains from a single location.
For travelers exploring the region by car, the park can therefore be a rewarding stop between Matsumoto’s urban attractions and the mountain destinations of the Northern Alps.
Matsumoto Alps Park brings together several aspects of the region in one spacious landscape. The Museum of Mountains and Nature explains the mountains and wildlife, the small animal park introduces visitors to local and familiar animals, and the Alps Dream Coaster adds an element of adventure.
At the same time, the park itself provides an opportunity to simply slow down and enjoy the scenery. Its forests, lawns, trails, and panoramic viewpoints make it easy to experience the natural environment without undertaking a demanding mountain hike.
From the Matsumoto Bus Terminal, visitors can take the Alpico Transportation bus service, known locally as the Matsumoto Railway Bus, on the Gurutto Matsumoto Alps Park route. The journey takes approximately 20 minutes, with the final stop located at the park.
However, this direct service operates only twice a day, with departures at 10:00 and 14:00, so visitors using public transportation should plan their schedule carefully.
Another option is to get off at the Fukashi High School Back Gate stop on a Shinshu University Hospital-bound bus, or at the Kita-Arigasaki stop on a Yamashiroguchi-bound bus, followed by a walk of approximately 30 minutes.
The nearest railway stations are Kita-Matsumoto Station on the JR Oito Line and Matsumoto Station on the JR Shinonoi Line and Alpico Transportation Kamikochi Line. From either station, visitors can continue by bus or on foot.
By car, Matsumoto Alps Park is approximately 25 minutes from the Matsumoto Interchange on the Nagano Expressway. The park has spacious parking facilities, making it particularly convenient for travelers exploring Matsumoto and the surrounding mountain areas by car.
Matsumoto Alps Park is much more than a scenic viewpoint. It is a large natural recreation area where visitors can combine mountain scenery, wildlife, outdoor activities, and cultural learning.
Families can enjoy the playgrounds, animals, and Alps Dream Coaster, while nature lovers can explore the trails and seasonal landscapes. Visitors interested in the region’s mountains can learn more at the Museum of Mountains and Nature before taking in the panoramic views from its observation deck.
For travelers visiting Matsumoto, the park offers a refreshing change of pace from historic buildings and museums in the city center. With the Northern Alps stretching across the horizon and the forests and hills surrounding you, it is an ideal place to experience the natural side of Matsumoto at your own pace.
