Michi-no-Eki Futakami Park Taima (Roadside Station)

A Gateway to the Natural Bounty and History of Mount Nijo

Michi-no-Eki Futakami Park Taima is a roadside station located along National Route 165 in Shinzaike, Katsuragi City, Nara Prefecture. Its name comes from Futakami Furusato Park, which lies immediately to the west, and Taima, the name of the former town in this area. Bringing together nature, history, and local food culture, the facility is a popular stop for both travelers and residents.

Taima no Ie: A Market Filled with Local Produce

The heart of the roadside station is Taima no Ie, a specialty shop offering fresh vegetables, rice, flowers, and other products grown by local farmers. Many vegetables are delivered directly by the people who grow them, often soon after the morning harvest. The shelves are filled with fresh seasonal produce from the Katsuragi area.

The shop also focuses on handmade products that visitors may find difficult to buy elsewhere. These include miso, pickles, wheat-based mochi, traditional rice cakes and other sweets, bread, cakes, and jams. One of its popular products is Hinohikari rice, a variety recommended by Nara Prefecture and sold under the shop’s own brand.

Enjoy Local Cuisine at the Traditional-Style Restaurant

The roadside station also has a restaurant with a rustic, traditional Japanese atmosphere. Its menu features regional dishes prepared with plenty of fresh ingredients from Katsuragi City. Popular choices include the Kehaya Gozen set meal, Futakami Udon, Taima no Ie Udon, and Nijo-san Curry, making it a convenient place to enjoy a satisfying meal during a sightseeing trip.

Visitors can also take part in hands-on food-making activities, including preparing udon, soba noodles, tofu, bread, and pizza. These experiences offer an enjoyable way to discover local food traditions, but reservations are required.

Learn About Food and Farming Through Hands-On Experiences

At the on-site processing facility, visitors can participate in activities such as making miso, wheat mochi, dried or powdered vegetables, jams, and pickles. The grounds also include a farm where seasonal agricultural experiences, such as digging up sweet potatoes, are offered.

These activities provide children and adults alike with opportunities to learn about the connection between food, farming, and everyday life while enjoying a memorable visit.

Futakami Furusato Park: A Place to Relax and Play in Nature

About 50 meters west of the roadside station is the entrance to Futakami Furusato Park, a nature park at the foot of Mount Nijo. At its center is a large lawn of approximately 7,000 square meters, making the park a popular destination for families and anyone looking for outdoor recreation.

Play Areas for Children and Families

The park offers a variety of outdoor attractions designed to make the most of its natural surroundings. Wanpaku Hiroba is a play area with wooden combination playground equipment, while Mizube Terrace becomes a popular place for water play in summer. There is also a toy museum designed in the style of a log cabin.

The spacious lawn is ideal for picnics, relaxing, and letting children play freely. With its combination of open green space and family-friendly facilities, the park is a pleasant place to spend time before or after visiting the roadside station.

Climb 456 Stone Steps for Panoramic Views

On the western side of the park, a long staircase of 456 stone steps leads to an observation platform. After climbing to the top, visitors are rewarded with sweeping views across the Nara Basin.

Depending on the season, hydrangeas bloom along the staircase, adding color to the climb and making the walk especially enjoyable for nature lovers and photography enthusiasts.

The area surrounding Michi-no-Eki Futakami Park Taima is rich in historical and cultural attractions. Nearby Sekkoji Temple is known for its beautiful peonies, while Taimadera Temple is famous for its National Treasure Taima Mandala, a Buddhist image depicting the Pure Land.

The roadside station makes a convenient starting point or rest stop for visitors exploring these historic temples and the wider Katsuragi area. Travelers can combine a visit to the local market and restaurant with a walk through the park and a tour of the region’s religious and cultural sites.
