Roadside Station Oasis Nan-moku

A Relaxing Gateway to the Bounty of the Mountains and Clear Streams

Roadside Station Oasis Nan-moku is located in Nan-moku Village, Kanra District, Gunma Prefecture, along Gunma Prefectural Route 45. Set beside the clear waters of the Nan-moku River and surrounded by beautiful mountains, it offers visitors a peaceful place to rest while discovering the natural and culinary treasures of the region.

As the 24th roadside station registered in Gunma Prefecture, Oasis Nan-moku serves both as a local community hub and as a gateway for visitors exploring the village.

Far from the noise of the city, visitors can enjoy fresh mountain air, the gentle sound of the river, and the peaceful atmosphere of a traditional rural community. The facility brings together the simple and welcoming character of Nan-moku Village in one convenient location.

Farm and Forest Produce Direct Sales Shop

The heart of the facility is its farm and forestry produce market, where visitors can find fresh vegetables and mountain produce harvested in Nan-moku Village.

Alongside seasonal vegetables, the market offers local specialties such as konnyaku and dried sweet potatoes. These products provide an opportunity to discover flavors that are closely connected with everyday life in this mountain community.

Handmade Foods from Kaachan Honpo

One of the most popular selections is the range of handmade side dishes prepared by the local women’s group Kaachan Honpo. The group preserves traditional home-style recipes, offering simple and nostalgic flavors rooted in the local community.

One of its signature products is shiso-maki, made by wrapping sweet-and-savory miso in shiso leaves and carefully grilling them in oil. It is sold from around mid-June through early autumn and is enjoyed as a seasonal specialty associated with the arrival of summer.

The shiso, perilla seeds, and green chili peppers are grown without agricultural chemicals, and the shiso leaves are hand-picked early in the morning before each batch is prepared. The recipe was developed through discussions among the women of the group, bringing together the different flavors that had traditionally been prepared in individual households.

The product became so popular through word of mouth that people from outside the village began asking where they could purchase it. However, with a strong desire to bring vitality to their hometown, the group generally continues to sell it exclusively at this roadside station.

Torao’s Bread and Mountain Specialties

Another local favorite is Torao’s Bread. Made by a local baker named Torao in a charcoal kiln located halfway up the mountain, the bread is recognizable by its distinctive tiger-stripe pattern.

It has a rustic, fragrant flavor with a subtle character imparted by charcoal baking. Other unique products include nozawana vegetable oyaki, grilled rice cakes, processed blueberry products, charcoal-related foods, and kunugi stones.

Dried sweet potatoes are also available during winter, allowing visitors to discover different local products depending on the season.

Café and Light Meals

The facility also has a café and light-meal area serving casual dishes such as ramen, soba, udon, and curry rice.

It is a convenient place to stop for a warm meal during a drive or after hiking in the surrounding mountains. Visitors can also try distinctive drinks such as locally roasted soybean coffee.

Surrounded by peaceful natural scenery, the café provides a pleasant place to slow down and take a break.

Facilities and Visitor Convenience

The parking area accommodates 47 standard vehicles, two large vehicles, and one accessible parking space. EV charging facilities are also available.

Other facilities include restrooms, an information area, and an open space that can be used for events. These amenities make Oasis Nan-moku a convenient base for exploring the surrounding area.

The regular closing day is Tuesday, or the following day when Tuesday falls on a public holiday. The facility is also closed during the New Year holiday period. Visitors are advised to check the latest opening information before traveling.
