Roadside Station Nijinoko (Rainbow Lake Park)

A Scenic Lakeside Rest Stop Surrounded by Nature

Roadside Station Nijinoko, also known as Rainbow Lake Park, is a popular roadside destination in Kuroishi, Aomori Prefecture. Located along National Route 102, it is a convenient place to take a break while exploring the mountains and lakes of southern Aomori.

The facility opened in 1988, following the completion of the Asaseishi River Dam, and was developed as part of the dam’s surrounding park. The spacious grounds combine a scenic lakeside setting with recreational facilities, food stalls, local products, and educational attractions.

In spring, cherry blossoms brighten the park, while autumn brings colorful foliage to the shores of Rainbow Lake. With different scenery in every season, the park is enjoyed by both local residents and travelers.

A Spacious Park Surrounded by Seasonal Nature

Rainbow Lake Park covers approximately 59,000 square meters and is surrounded by lush greenery. A variety of seasonal flowers are planted throughout the grounds, including cherry blossoms, peonies, azaleas, and rhododendrons.

Spring is especially attractive when rows of cherry trees come into bloom. In early summer, the peony garden becomes one of the park’s highlights, while autumn transforms the surrounding mountains and lakeshore with brilliant foliage.

Walking beside the lake is a relaxing way to enjoy the changing scenery. Rather than simply stopping for a meal or rest, visitors can spend time outdoors and experience the natural beauty of the Tsugaru region.

Family-Friendly Activities

Rainbow Lake Park offers much more than a place to stop during a road trip. Its recreational facilities make it possible to spend several hours enjoying the outdoors, making the park particularly popular with families and groups of friends.

Miniature Golf Course

The park’s putting golf course has a playful design incorporating apple-themed tunnels, ponds, bridges, and other features. The course is suitable for both children and adults and provides an enjoyable way to spend time outdoors.

Field Athletics

The field athletic area features outdoor equipment that children and parents can enjoy together. It is a good choice for families looking for an active break surrounded by nature.

Large Playground

Children can enjoy a variety of playground equipment, including jungle gyms and swings. The spacious surroundings allow children to play while adults relax nearby.

Peony Garden

In June, the peony garden becomes a colorful highlight of the park. Red and white peonies bloom across the grounds, creating an attractive seasonal landscape.

Barbecue Area

A barbecue area is also available, allowing visitors to enjoy a meal outdoors in the natural surroundings. It is particularly suitable for groups and families spending an extended day at the park.

Local Food and Souvenirs

The park includes a small food-stall area where visitors can sample local specialties from Kuroishi and the surrounding Tsugaru region.

Kuroishi Tsuyu Yakisoba

One of the local specialties to look for is Kuroishi Tsuyu Yakisoba. Unlike ordinary yakisoba, this regional dish combines flat noodles with a sweet-and-savory sauce and a hot soup-based broth.

The combination may be unfamiliar to visitors from outside Japan, but it is a distinctive example of local Japanese comfort food. The dish is especially satisfying after spending time outdoors.

Other Local Flavors

Visitors can also enjoy niboshi ramen, a style of ramen flavored with dried sardines that is strongly associated with the Tsugaru area.

The souvenir area also offers locally grown apples and processed apple products, making the roadside station a convenient place to discover some of Aomori’s famous agricultural products.

Asaseishi River Dam and Rainbow Lake

The scenery and history of Rainbow Lake Park are closely connected with the Asaseishi River Dam. The Asaseishi River begins in the southern Hakkoda mountains, including Mount Kushigamine and Mount Ohanabeyama, and eventually joins the Iwaki River system, which flows toward the Sea of Japan.

The dam was developed as a multipurpose dam, serving several important functions including flood control and the supply of water for municipal and agricultural use.

Investigations for the project began in 1971, and construction of the main dam structure started in 1979. After approximately 18 years of work and a major investment, the dam was completed in 1988.

The resulting reservoir created the scenic lake known as Rainbow Lake, around which the park and roadside station were developed.

Learning About the Dam at the Asaseishi River Dam Museum

The Asaseishi River Dam Museum offers an easy-to-understand introduction to the dam’s structure, history, and role in managing water resources. It is particularly suitable for families, school groups, and travelers interested in engineering and the relationship between people and nature.

Flood-Control Simulation Model

On the first floor, visitors can see a dam discharge simulation model. Using real water, the model demonstrates how a dam controls water levels during periods of heavy rainfall and flooding.

This hands-on presentation makes the otherwise complex mechanisms of dam management much easier to understand, especially for children.

3D Theater

The second floor features a 3D theater where visitors can learn about the natural environment and the role of the dam through immersive images and powerful sound.

The presentation provides a different perspective on the surrounding landscape and helps explain why dams are important for both communities and the environment.

Inside the Dam Structure

Visitors may also have the opportunity to enter the interior of the dam itself. Walking through the concrete structure offers a rare chance to experience the scale and engineering of a large dam from the inside.

For those interested in civil engineering or infrastructure, this is one of the most unusual experiences available at Rainbow Lake Park.

Convenient Location Along National Route 102

Roadside Station Nijinoko is located directly along National Route 102, with spacious parking areas on both sides of the road. This makes it particularly convenient for travelers exploring the region by car.

The Konan Bus Kuroishi–Nijinoko Park–Nukadate Line also serves the area. Visitors can get off at the Nijinoko Koen-mae bus stop, located close to the park.

From Kuroishi Station on the Konan Railway, the park is approximately 15 minutes away by car. Its location also makes it easy to incorporate into a wider sightseeing route connecting Kuroishi, Hirosaki, and Lake Towada.

A Great Stop on a Southern Aomori Road Trip

Roadside Station Nijinoko is more than a conventional roadside rest area. Set beside a scenic reservoir created by the Asaseishi River Dam, it combines beautiful nature, family-friendly activities, local cuisine, shopping, and educational attractions.

Nearby destinations include Aoni Onsen, the Tsugaru Kokeshi Museum, and Nakano Momijiyama, making Rainbow Lake Park a convenient stop when exploring the Kuroishi area.

Whether you want to enjoy seasonal flowers, play miniature golf with your family, sample Kuroishi’s unique local food, learn about dam engineering, or simply relax beside the water, Rainbow Lake Park offers a variety of experiences in one scenic location.

With cherry blossoms in spring, flowers in early summer, and colorful foliage in autumn, Rainbow Lake changes its character throughout the year. For travelers exploring the natural and cultural attractions of southern Aomori, it is a pleasant place to slow down, enjoy the scenery, and discover another side of the Tsugaru region.
