An Immersive Aerial Experience through the Clouds

One of the greatest attractions of the Ryuoo Ropeway is the combination of its impressive scale and immersive atmosphere. The spacious gondola carries 166 passengers while providing an open view of the surrounding mountains.

At times, the gondola passes directly through clouds. When this happens, the view can suddenly become enveloped in a world of pure white, creating a mysterious sensation as though the gondola were floating through the sky.

The ropeway climbs an elevation difference of approximately 790 meters along slopes with a maximum gradient of more than 30 degrees. As it rises, the scenery gradually changes from lush green mountain landscapes around the base to the crisp air and expansive views of the high mountains.

This changing scenery is one of the highlights of the journey, allowing visitors to experience the transition from the forested foothills to the alpine world high above.

A Magnificent Panorama from the Summit

After stepping off the ropeway at the summit, visitors are greeted by a breathtaking panoramic view.

On clear days, the vista extends toward the majestic peaks of the Northern Alps, as well as the mountains of the Five Mountains of Northern Shinshu, including Mount Myoko and Mount Madarao. On exceptionally clear days, it may even be possible to see Sado Island far away in the Sea of Japan.

Mount Kosha stretches out below, creating the extraordinary sensation of looking down on the world from above the clouds. The vast panorama is a memorable experience unlike the views normally encountered in everyday life.

A Fantastical World of Sea of Clouds and Sunset

When weather conditions are favorable, a vast sea of clouds can spread across the landscape below the summit. Clouds often form during the morning and evening, covering the valleys like an ocean while mountain peaks emerge like islands floating above the clouds.

In the evening, the setting sun combines with the sea of clouds to create a spectacular scene. The sky gradually changes from brilliant orange to shades of purple, while the mountains and clouds are illuminated by the fading sunlight.

This dramatic evening scenery is particularly popular and is one of the reasons many visitors make the journey to the summit.

Special Moments at SORA terrace

At the summit is SORA terrace, one of the area’s most famous scenic viewpoints. Built to extend outward from the steep mountainside, the terrace provides an open, unobstructed view of the surrounding landscape.

Visitors can enjoy the sea of clouds and colorful sunsets during the day, while nighttime brings an entirely different atmosphere. Because of the high elevation and relatively clear air, the area provides favorable conditions for observing the Milky Way and shooting stars with the naked eye.

SORA terrace cafe

The SORA terrace cafe is located beside the observation terrace, allowing visitors to relax while enjoying the spectacular scenery.

The café features comfortable sofa seating and window seats beside large panes of glass. Sitting indoors while looking out over the clouds creates the sensation of dining high above the mountains.

The menu includes original dishes and desserts inspired by the scenery, such as a pot pie soup inspired by the sea of clouds and fluffy marshmallow sweets. Enjoying a meal or dessert together with the panoramic view can make a visit to the summit even more memorable.

Early Summer Alpine Flowers

In early summer, alpine plants bloom across the mountain slopes. At Ryuoo Marsh, visitors can enjoy delicate seasonal flowers and the peaceful beauty of the highland environment.

Autumn Foliage

In autumn, the surrounding mountains turn brilliant shades of red, orange, and yellow. The combination of autumn foliage, a sea of clouds, and the setting sun creates one of the most spectacular seasonal landscapes at Ryuoo.

Winter Snow Scenery

Winter transforms the mountain into a quiet world covered in snow. The pristine white landscape creates a mysterious and serene atmosphere, while the area also operates as Ryuoo Ski Park, offering skiing and snowboarding.

Starlit Night Cruises and Seasonal Events

During the summer season, the Starlit Night Cruise offers a special opportunity to ride the ropeway after dark and enjoy the night sky from the summit.

Because the summit is relatively free from the effects of city lights, countless stars can become visible on clear nights. The experience offers a view of the night sky that is difficult to find in urban areas.

Various other events are also held throughout the year, including music performances and seasonal activities. Each visit can therefore offer a different experience depending on the season and event schedule.

Convenient Access and Nearby Facilities

Ryuoo Mountain Resort has accommodation and hot spring facilities, making it possible to stay overnight and enjoy the mountain at a relaxed pace.

The historic hot spring destinations of Yudanaka Onsen and Shibu Onsen are also nearby. Visitors can combine a trip to the ropeway with traditional Japanese hot spring bathing and sightseeing in the surrounding area.

The resort can be reached from Yudanaka Station by bus or car. By car, the journey from the Shinshu-Nakano Interchange takes approximately 25 minutes. A large parking area is also available, making the resort convenient for visitors traveling by car.
