A Green Space at the Foot of Mount Satsukiyama

The botanical garden is located at 5-2-5 Satsukigaoka, Ikeda City, on a site covering approximately 5.3 hectares. The grounds make use of the natural landscape along the slopes beside the Sugigaya River, creating a garden where cultivated plant displays blend naturally with the surrounding mountain environment.

Visitors can enjoy a variety of themed gardens and facilities throughout the grounds, making the botanical garden an appealing destination in every season.

Gardens and Facilities

Ikeda Green Center

The Ikeda Green Center serves as an educational and cultural facility within the botanical garden. Gardening classes and flower-design classes are regularly held here, giving visitors opportunities to deepen their knowledge of plants and horticulture.

The two-story reinforced-concrete building has a total floor area of approximately 390 square meters. The first floor includes an approximately 100-square-meter exhibition gallery and a 40-square-meter office. On the second floor are an approximately 80-square-meter meeting room and a 17-square-meter reference room. The building also features an approximately 40-square-meter rooftop wildflower garden, providing another opportunity to observe plants in a carefully designed setting.

Rest Flower Hall Greenhouse

The Rest Flower Hall is a greenhouse facility where visitors can encounter unusual plants and flowers throughout the year. The single-story steel structure has a total area of approximately 227 square meters and includes temperature-controlled greenhouse space as well as an entrance area designed to help maintain the appropriate environment inside.

The greenhouse provides an opportunity to enjoy plants that may be difficult to observe outdoors during certain seasons, making it an attractive stop for visitors interested in botanical diversity.

Seasonal and Themed Gardens

The grounds include several specialized areas, including a Rhododendron and Azalea Garden, a Fragrant Tree Garden, a Hydrangea Garden, and a Fruit-Bearing Tree Garden. Each area offers a different way to appreciate the variety of plants and their changing appearance throughout the year.

In spring, rhododendrons and azaleas add vivid color to the garden, while hydrangeas become a highlight during the summer. Seasonal plant displays create an ever-changing landscape that rewards visitors who return at different times of the year.

History of the Botanical Garden

Development from 1981

Development of the Satsukiyama Green Space Urban Greening Botanical Garden began in 1981. Construction of the Ikeda Green Center began on January 8, 1987, and the facility opened on October 1 of the same year.

Construction of the greenhouse began in September 1988. The Rest Flower Hall was completed on April 28, 1989, and the botanical garden as a whole officially opened on May 12, 1989.

The garden was thus developed as part of Ikeda’s efforts to create a place where urban residents could experience greenery while also learning about plants and environmental conservation.

Learning About Plants and Nature

Gardening Classes and Workshops

Education is an important part of the garden’s role. The Ikeda Green Center hosts gardening and flower-design classes, while seasonal exhibitions and workshops provide opportunities for visitors to discover different plants and horticultural techniques.

Nature observation activities are also offered for children, helping younger visitors develop an interest in the natural world. These programs make the garden more than simply a place to admire flowers: it is also a community learning space centered on plants and the environment.

A Garden That Changes with the Seasons

One of the pleasures of visiting the botanical garden is seeing how its appearance changes throughout the year. Spring brings the colorful blooms of rhododendrons and azaleas, while summer brings hydrangeas and lush greenery.

Seasonal exhibitions and plant displays provide additional reasons to visit at different times of the year. For travelers interested in Japanese gardens and the changing character of the Japanese landscape, the garden offers a quiet opportunity to experience nature close to the city.
