Kasuga Okami

Kasuga Okami is a collective name for the deities enshrined at Kasuga Taisha in Nara, one of Japan’s most important historic Shinto shrines.

History of Shinmei Shrine

Shinmei Shrine has a long history and has undergone several relocations and changes throughout the centuries.

Foundation and Early History

The shrine originally stood in Saiin, Kyoto. Following an invitation to establish the shrine in Osaka under the patronage of Emperor Go-Yozei, it was relocated to an area known as Roshokucho, the former name for what is now Uchi-Hiranocho 2-chome.

In 1616, during the early Edo period, the shrine was moved to its present area under the direction of Matsudaira Tadaaki. It also served as a guardian shrine for Osaka Castle.

During the Edo period, it was known as “Nitchu Shinmei” and became a place where townspeople came to pray for their wishes and protection.

Changes from the Meiji Period Onward

1907 – Merger with Hachiman Shrine

In 1907, Hachiman Shrine in Minamikogi Village, Sennan District, an area now part of Kaizuka City, was merged with Shinmei Shrine.

The shrine was subsequently elevated to the status of a village shrine, and its name was changed to its present name, Shinmei Shrine.

1914 – Designation for State Ceremonies

In 1914, the shrine was designated as a Kanpei Heihaku-ryo Kyoshin Shrine, making it eligible to receive offerings of food and ritual goods under the shrine system of the time.

1924 – Relocation to Tsurumachi

In August 1924, the shrine was relocated to its present location in Tsurumachi 2-chome, Taisho Ward.

The shrine suffered damage during World War II air raids but was subsequently rebuilt and restored.

The Three Shinmei Shrines of Osaka

Shinmei Shrine is traditionally recognized as one of the Three Shinmei Shrines of Osaka, also known as the Three Shinmei Shrines of Naniwa.

Asahi Shinmei Shrine

Asahi Shinmei Shrine was known for having its main sanctuary facing east. It was formerly located in Kanzakicho and has since been relocated to Kasugade-Naka 1-chome in Konohana Ward, Osaka City.

Nitchu Shinmei Shrine

Nitchu Shinmei Shrine refers to Shinmei Shrine itself. It was formerly located in Uchi-Hiranocho 2-chome, where its sanctuary faced south.

Although the shrine was later relocated to its present site in Tsurumachi 2-chome, its traditional connection with the Nitchu Shinmei lineage has continued.

Yuhi Shinmei Shrine

Yuhi Shinmei Shrine was known for having its sanctuary facing west and was formerly located in Sonezaki Village.

It has since been relocated to Sonezaki 2-chome in Kita Ward, Osaka City, where it remains as a subsidiary shrine within the grounds of Tsuyuten Shrine.

A Historic Shrine Preserving Osaka’s Religious Heritage

Shinmei Shrine has preserved a long history and rich religious tradition while remaining closely connected with the people of Taisho Ward.

Its history of relocation, its connection with Osaka Castle, and its status as one of the Three Shinmei Shrines of Osaka make it a distinctive part of Osaka’s cultural heritage.

Visitors can step away from the surrounding city and spend a quiet moment in the shrine grounds, experiencing the peaceful and solemn atmosphere of a traditional Japanese place of worship.
