Shirakaba Lake is an artificial lake located on the border between Chino City and Tateshina Town in Nagano Prefecture. Set at an elevation of approximately 1,416 meters, the lake stretches across a beautiful highland landscape. It has a circumference of about 3.8 kilometers and covers approximately 36 hectares. The lake is part of the Yatsugatake-Chushin Kogen Quasi-National Park.
The lakeside is home to a wide variety of attractions, including an amusement park, art museums, hot spring facilities, ski resorts, hotels, and guesthouses. With activities and scenery that can be enjoyed throughout the year, Shirakaba Lake is one of Nagano’s popular highland resort destinations.

With its elevation of more than 1,400 meters, Shirakaba Lake offers a cool retreat during the summer months. Visitors can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities, including canoeing, kayaking, boating, cycling, and camping.

In autumn, the surrounding mountains, including Yashigamine, Kirigamine, and Kurumayama, are transformed by colorful foliage. The red and golden trees reflected on the surface of the lake create a particularly beautiful landscape.

From the shore, visitors can enjoy impressive views of Mount Tateshina, Kurumayama, and the surrounding highlands. The combination of the tranquil lake and expansive mountain scenery provides a relaxing escape from the city.
Shirakaba Lake was constructed in 1946 to secure water for agricultural use. Before the lake was created, the area was a quiet high-altitude wetland near the headwaters of the Otonashi River, with white birch, larch, reeds, and other vegetation growing naturally throughout the area.
The construction of a dam created the lake, and the surrounding area was gradually developed into a tourist destination.
When the lake was first completed, white birch trees that had been submerged in the water died and remained protruding from the surface. The unusual sight is said to have created a mysterious and almost dreamlike landscape.
Although those trees can no longer be seen today, the name Shirakaba Lake, meaning “White Birch Lake,” preserves a connection to the landscape that once existed here.
Shirakaba Lake is located along the Venus Line, a famous scenic road through the highlands of Nagano Prefecture. The road itself is a popular destination for scenic drives, offering beautiful views that change with the seasons.
