Yatsugatake Kogen Uminokuchi Nature Resort

A Highland Resort Where Nature and Culture Come Together

Yatsugatake Kogen Uminokuchi Nature Resort is a scenic highland resort spread across the eastern foothills of the Yatsugatake Mountains in Minamimaki Village, Minamisaku District, Nagano Prefecture. At an elevation of approximately 1,500 meters, the area is surrounded by clear mountain air and beautiful natural landscapes.

The resort is home to several distinctive facilities, including Yatsugatake Kogen Lodge, Yatsugatake Kogen Hut, and the Yatsugatake Kogen Music Hall, a destination known among classical music enthusiasts. The area is also popular as a vacation-home community, offering visitors and residents an opportunity to enjoy a peaceful retreat in the mountains.

Far removed from the noise of the city, Uminokuchi Nature Resort combines seasonal mountain scenery with music, architecture, history, and outdoor activities, creating a distinctive highland destination.

History of the Resort

The development of Yatsugatake Kogen Uminokuchi Nature Resort began in 1963. At the time, the Sezon Group launched a project to transform a former, overgrown pasture by planting trees and developing the land.

During Japan’s period of rapid economic growth, demand increased for refined resort environments where people could escape the city and enjoy nature. With its relatively convenient access from urban areas and its highland setting, the Yatsugatake foothills became an attractive destination for this type of retreat.

Following the financial difficulties and restructuring of the Sezon Group, the resort is now owned and managed by Sogo & Seibu, including its accommodation facilities and vacation-home areas. Information facilities in major urban department stores have also helped maintain connections between the resort and visitors from cities such as Tokyo and Yokohama.

Yatsugatake Kogen Hut and Its Connection to Japanese Television

In 1968, a former residence of Marquis Yoshichika Tokugawa in Mejiro, Tokyo, was relocated to the resort and transformed into Yatsugatake Kogen Hut.

The building later became widely known as the setting for the popular 1976 television drama “Kogen e Irasshai”, starring Jiro Tamiya and Yumi Kaoru. A remake starring Koichi Sato and Haruka Igawa was produced in 2003, bringing renewed attention to the historic building.

Yatsugatake Kogen Hut is no longer operated as accommodation. However, it is opened as a restaurant during periods such as Golden Week, the summer vacation season, and special events, allowing visitors to experience its distinctive atmosphere.

Yatsugatake Kogen Lodge

For visitors wishing to stay overnight, Yatsugatake Kogen Lodge provides accommodation in the heart of the highlands. Located at an elevation of approximately 1,500 meters, the lodge consists of Central, South, and North buildings and offers 68 guest rooms, including suites.

The lodge also features two restaurants, a bar lounge, an art salon, and a shop. Surrounded by forests of Japanese larch and azaleas, guests can enjoy the peaceful sounds of nature while spending time in a refined mountain setting.

Yatsugatake Kogen Music Hall

Music in Harmony with the Mountain Landscape

Yatsugatake Kogen Music Hall opened in 1988, growing out of small salon concerts that had been held in the lobby of Yatsugatake Kogen Lodge.

The project was developed into a full concert hall with advice from internationally renowned pianist Sviatoslav Richter and composer Toru Takemitsu. The resulting hall was designed to harmonize with its natural surroundings.

Over the years, the venue has hosted prominent musicians and ensembles, including the Smetana String Quartet, Yuriko Kuronuma, and Toru Takemitsu. Traditional Japanese performing arts have also been presented here, including performances by kyogen actor Mansaku Nomura.

Listening to music surrounded by forests and mountain scenery offers a very different experience from attending a concert in an urban hall.

Outdoor Activities Throughout the Seasons

Yatsugatake Kogen Uminokuchi Nature Resort offers outdoor activities that change with the seasons. In winter, visitors can enjoy snowshoeing and cross-country skiing through snow-covered forests.

Walking through a quiet winter forest provides a sense of space and tranquility that is difficult to experience in the city. From spring through autumn, hiking and birdwatching are popular ways to explore the natural environment.

The Natural Beauty of the Yatsugatake Mountains

The Yatsugatake Mountains are a major volcanic mountain range stretching approximately 25 kilometers from north to south across Nagano and Yamanashi prefectures. The range is centered around Mt. Akadake, its highest peak at 2,899 meters, and is made up of around 20 major peaks.

The mountains are known for their distinctive scenery and rich ecosystems, attracting hikers, climbers, nature enthusiasts, and travelers throughout the year.

Northern and Southern Yatsugatake

The Yatsugatake range is broadly divided into northern and southern sections by Natsuzawa Pass. North Yatsugatake is characterized by gentler mountain landscapes, forests, and scattered ponds and lakes, while South Yatsugatake features more dramatic rocky peaks and rugged terrain.

This contrast creates a wide variety of landscapes across the mountain range, with each season offering a different atmosphere.

The foothills are also home to highland vegetable fields and牧場, while the area’s relationship with human settlement extends back to the Jomon period of prehistoric Japan. Numerous Jomon archaeological sites have been discovered around the Yatsugatake region, adding an important historical dimension to its natural attractions.

A Highland Escape Surrounded by Nature and Culture

Yatsugatake Kogen Uminokuchi Nature Resort offers an unusual combination of mountain scenery, refined accommodation, music, history, and outdoor experiences. Visitors can stay at Yatsugatake Kogen Lodge, attend a concert surrounded by nature, explore the forests, or simply enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the highlands.

Whether visiting for music and culture, outdoor recreation, or a quiet escape from urban life, the resort provides an opportunity to experience the Yatsugatake mountains at a relaxed pace. Its blend of nature and culture makes it a distinctive destination in the Nagano highlands.
