KARAKORO Art Studio

A Historic Bank Building Reborn as a Cultural Hub

KARAKORO Art Studio is a cultural and commercial complex in Tonomachi, Matsue, Shimane Prefecture, housed in the former Matsue Branch of the Bank of Japan. Opened in 2000, the building has long been a familiar landmark for both local residents and visitors.

Following renovations, KARAKORO Art Studio has been transformed into a modern gathering place where visitors can enjoy food, culture, and art while experiencing the character of Matsue, a city known for its waterways, historic streets, and traditional culture.

The Story Behind the Name “KARAKORO”

The charming name “KARAKORO” is connected with Lafcadio Hearn, the writer who spent part of his life in Matsue. In 1890, Hearn was fascinated by the sound of wooden geta sandals striking the surface of Matsue Ohashi Bridge, which was then a wooden bridge.

The rhythmic “kara-koro” sound made by people walking across the bridge left a strong impression on Hearn. The name of the facility evokes this sound and the atmosphere of old Matsue, giving the building a connection with one of the city’s most famous literary figures.

A Historic Building with Striking Architecture

The building was originally opened in 1918 as the Matsue Branch of the Bank of Japan. It was reconstructed in reinforced concrete in 1938, based on a design by modern architect Uheiji Nagano.

The imposing exterior and robust construction reflect the character of early modern bank architecture. Particularly distinctive features include the heavy stone-like exterior, high ceilings, and the former underground vault, which remains inside the building.

The Bank of Japan moved to a new location in 1981, and the historic building was subsequently reborn as KARAKORO Art Studio in 2000. In 2016, it was registered as a Tangible Cultural Property of Japan, recognizing its architectural and historical significance.

Simply walking through the building provides a sense of its former role as a financial institution. The contrast between the solid structure of the former bank and the lively shops, restaurants, and cultural activities of today is one of its most interesting features.

Discover Matsue’s Food at a New Food Hall

One of the major attractions following the renovation is a food hall, described as the first of its kind in the San’in region. A variety of restaurants and food businesses occupy the first floor of the main building and the adjoining tenant building.

Visitors can sample dishes and sweets made with local ingredients while enjoying a relaxed atmosphere. The open garden terrace is another pleasant place to dine, allowing guests to enjoy their meal while feeling the changing seasons of Matsue.

The selection includes a wide range of styles, from Japanese and Western cuisine to ramen, yakiniku, cafés, and sweets. With so many choices available, the complex is suitable for families, couples, and groups with different tastes.

Experience Traditional Matsue Culture

KARAKORO Art Studio also offers cultural experiences known as “Matsue-style Activities.” These programs introduce visitors to some of the traditional arts and customs for which Matsue is known.

Depending on the program, participants can try activities such as making Japanese sweets, taking part in a tea ceremony, learning about Yakumo-nuri lacquerware, and pottery. Local craftspeople and instructors, affectionately known as “Osewasan,” guide participants through the experiences.

Programs designed for international visitors, including English-language experiences, are also available. These activities offer an opportunity not simply to observe Japanese culture but to experience it directly and learn about the traditions behind it.

The Former Bank Vault Turned into an Art Gallery

One of the most atmospheric spaces in KARAKORO Art Studio is the former underground bank vault. The thick walls and imposing vault door remain from the building’s days as a bank.

Today, this unusual historic space is used as a gallery and event venue. Exhibitions and sales events featuring local craftspeople, art exhibitions, concerts, and other cultural events are held here.

The combination of the former financial institution’s heavy architecture with contemporary art creates a distinctive atmosphere that cannot easily be experienced elsewhere in Matsue.

Local Products and Relaxing Spaces

The first floor also includes shops focusing on the lifestyle and culture of Shimane. Visitors can browse ceramics from local pottery studios, tea, Japanese sweets, seasonings, handicrafts, and original goods.

These shops are a convenient place to look for souvenirs that reflect Matsue’s local character. Rather than simply buying a generic souvenir, travelers can take home an item connected with the region’s traditional food culture, crafts, or everyday life.

A Convenient Stop During a Matsue Walking Tour

KARAKORO Art Studio is located close to Matsue Castle and the historic center of the city, making it easy to combine with sightseeing around the castle and the Horikawa waterways.

From JR Matsue Station, the journey by regular city bus takes approximately eight minutes. Get off at the Kyobashi bus stop and walk to the facility. Alternatively, the Gurutto Matsue Lake Line sightseeing bus stops directly at the KARAKORO Art Studio-mae stop.

The facility is also approximately a three-minute walk from the Karakoro Hiroba boarding point for the Horikawa sightseeing boats, making it particularly convenient to visit before or after a boat cruise.

Where History, Food, Culture, and Art Meet

KARAKORO Art Studio is a good example of how a historic building can be given a new role while preserving its connection with the past. Its former bank architecture, underground vault, and historical atmosphere remain, while restaurants, shops, galleries, and cultural experiences bring new energy to the building.

The story behind the name also connects the site with Lafcadio Hearn and his fascination with the sounds and scenery of old Matsue. For visitors interested in Japanese history and culture, this small detail provides an appealing link between the city’s past and present.

A Modern Gateway to Matsue’s Traditional Culture

At KARAKORO Art Studio, visitors can admire historic architecture, taste local food, shop for regional crafts, explore art exhibitions, and take part in traditional cultural experiences—all in one place.

Combined with a visit to Matsue Castle, a walk along the Horikawa waterways, or a sightseeing boat ride, KARAKORO Art Studio offers an enjoyable way to experience both the historic atmosphere and contemporary energy of Matsue. It is a place where the city’s architectural heritage meets everyday life, making it a memorable stop in the heart of the castle town.
