Roadside Station Agatsuma Gorge is a tourism and community hub in Higashiagatsuma, Gunma Prefecture, developed as a gateway to the nationally designated Agatsuma Gorge. Surrounded by beautiful natural scenery, the facility offers visitors the opportunity to enjoy the area’s spectacular landscape together with local food, culture, and hot springs.
Located along Municipal Road 5284, the roadside station is also easily accessible from National Route 145, making it a convenient place to stop during a scenic drive. In addition to serving travelers, it is also a popular gathering and relaxation spot for local residents.
One of the most distinctive features of Roadside Station Agatsuma Gorge is its playful ninja theme. Ninja-inspired decorations and merchandise can be found throughout the facility, while the ninja experience area offers activities such as shuriken throwing.
The experience is popular with children as well as adults and provides a fun way to create memorable travel experiences.
At the light-meal corner Asa-no-Aji, visitors can enjoy original treats such as soft-serve ice cream served with a shuriken-shaped cookie and the Agatsuma Gorge Squash, a refreshing drink inspired by the scenery of the gorge. These playful touches add an extra sense of adventure to a visit.
The Tengu Farmers’ Market is filled with fresh vegetables and fruits harvested in Higashiagatsuma and neighboring areas. Seasonal produce, freshly harvested vegetables, handmade konjac, udon, soba, and other local specialties are available throughout the year.
Popular products include the town’s branded rice, Sakuya-hime, as well as a variety of locally produced konjac products. Because the market offers carefully produced local foods, it is popular not only with visitors but also with residents.
It is also an excellent place to look for local souvenirs to take home after exploring the area.
Located toward the back of the facility, Agatsuma-tei serves comforting local dishes prepared with ingredients from the surrounding region. Rice and seasonal vegetables grown with clean water and fresh mountain air are used whenever possible, allowing the natural flavors of the ingredients to shine.
Recommended dishes include the rainbow trout rice bowl, prepared with trout raised using water from Hakoshima Spring, one of Japan’s 100 Famous Waters. Other options include a pork shabu-shabu rice bowl with specially prepared soy-sauce koji and a set meal featuring mixed rice and kenchin vegetable soup.
An alcohol corner also offers junmai sake made with locally grown specially cultivated rice and regional craft beer, providing another way to experience the flavors of Higashiagatsuma.
Within the grounds is the day-use hot spring facility Agatsuma Gorge Onsen Tengu-no-Yu. The facility uses natural hot spring water flowing directly from the source, providing a relaxing bathing experience surrounded by mountain scenery.
The spring is classified as a calcium-sodium sulfate and chloride spring and is a mildly alkaline, low-osmotic-pressure hot spring with a gentle feel. The facilities include an indoor bath, open-air bath, reclining bath, and private baths, making it suitable for families and couples as well as individual visitors.
The open-air bath also features a “penetrating stone”, traditionally regarded as a protective stone associated with overcoming difficult challenges, success in examinations, and safe childbirth. Its presence has made the area a point of interest for visitors seeking a symbolic power spot.
There is also a free footbath outdoors, where visitors can warm their feet and relax during a sightseeing break. Bathing while taking in the seasonal scenery of the surrounding mountains offers a particularly peaceful experience.
Adjacent to the roadside station, Agatsuma Fureai Park provides a spacious outdoor area where visitors of different generations can relax and play. The park includes a multipurpose field, children’s play area, health exercise area, and walking paths.
Play equipment for young children and outdoor fitness equipment are available, making the park suitable for everyone from small children to older visitors.
A popular feature is the approximately 1,500-square-meter natural grass dog run, which is divided into a small-dog area and a free area. It is an ideal place for dogs to stretch their legs and enjoy a break during a long drive.
Roadside Station Agatsuma Gorge also serves as a convenient base for exploring Agatsuma Gorge and other nearby attractions. Walking trails through the gorge offer different scenery throughout the year, including mitsuba azaleas in spring, fresh green foliage, and brilliant autumn colors.
Other nearby natural attractions include Hakoshima Spring, Mount Iwabitsu, and Mount Asamakakushi. The area is also convenient for hiking and mountain trekking.
Several sightseeing farms in the surrounding region offer seasonal apple and grape picking, giving visitors another opportunity to experience the local landscape and taste fresh produce directly from the source.
Roadside Station Agatsuma Gorge was developed around the concept of a “village where visitors can encounter the remaining beauty of the gorge.” It has grown into a multifunctional destination where visitors can enjoy the magnificent scenery of Agatsuma Gorge together with local food, culture, hot springs, and outdoor activities.
The day-use hot spring facility Tengu-no-Yu opened ahead of the rest of the complex in April 2010. Additional visitor facilities were completed in October 2014, when the site officially opened as Gunma Prefecture’s 30th roadside station.
More than simply a place to stop and rest, the facility has developed as a center for interaction between people and people, people and nature, and people and animals and plants. It plays an important role in both tourism and community activities, welcoming visitors to the Higashiagatsuma area.
Roadside Station Agatsuma Gorge brings together many of the pleasures of traveling through Higashiagatsuma. Visitors can admire the changing scenery of Agatsuma Gorge, sample local foods, shop for regional products, enjoy a hot spring bath, and let children and pets stretch their legs in the adjacent park.
Whether stopping during a scenic drive or using the facility as a base for exploring the surrounding mountains and gorge, it offers a convenient and enjoyable introduction to the natural and cultural attractions of Higashiagatsuma.
