Funao Falls is a spectacular waterfall in Yoshioka Town, Kitagunma District, Gunma Prefecture, and is one of the town’s most representative natural attractions. Surrounded by the forests and mountains of the Mount Haruna range, the waterfall is fed by abundant spring water that plunges dramatically over a steep cliff.
With a drop of approximately 72 meters, Funao Falls creates an impressive sight that can be appreciated even from a distance. The waterfall is also designated as a cultural property of Yoshioka Town and has long been cherished by local residents.
The sound of rushing water echoing through the quiet forest, together with the changing scenery of the seasons, creates a peaceful atmosphere that makes Funao Falls an appealing destination for nature walks and sightseeing.
Funao Falls is formed by spring water from the Mount Haruna range flowing over a steep cliff. The water drops almost vertically from the top of the falls, creating a graceful appearance that resembles a white cloth hanging down from the cliff.
The waterfall is located at the northwestern edge of Mount Funao, also known as Mount Azuma. Rocky slopes and dense forests surround the falls, creating a landscape in which the waterfall seems to blend naturally into the mountain environment.
The combination of the powerful flow of water and the peaceful forest scenery allows visitors to experience both the beauty and strength of nature.
The name Funao Falls may seem unusual because the name includes the Japanese character for “ship.” According to local tradition, however, its origins are connected not to ships but to the sacred nature of the surrounding area.
In the past, the area around the waterfall was regarded as a sacred place that people were not freely permitted to enter. The waterfall was once known as Fnyu Falls (Fnyu-taki), meaning a waterfall associated with an area where entry was forbidden.
Over time, the pronunciation and written form are said to have changed, eventually giving rise to the name Funao Falls. The characters used for “Funao” are also thought to have been adopted as a phonetic substitute for the original name.
Funao Falls is also connected with local religious traditions. According to longstanding local stories, when droughts affected the area in the past, people came to the waterfall to pray to the dragon deity believed to dwell there and ask for rain.
Because the waterfall provided a source of abundant water, it was an important place for people whose livelihoods depended on agriculture. Prayers for rain and gratitude for the blessings of nature became part of the traditions associated with this sacred landscape.
One of the great attractions of Funao Falls is the way its surroundings change throughout the year. Each season gives the waterfall a different character, making it a place worth visiting more than once.
From spring through summer, the surrounding mountains are covered in vivid green foliage. The bright white flow of the waterfall stands out beautifully against the fresh greenery, creating a striking natural contrast.
Soft sunlight filtering through the trees and the sound of the falling water create a peaceful atmosphere, making this an especially pleasant season for walking through the forest.
In autumn, the surrounding mountains are transformed by colorful foliage. Red and yellow leaves contrast with the rugged rock surfaces around the waterfall, creating a dramatic mountain landscape.
The peak season for autumn colors is generally from late October to mid-November, when many visitors come to enjoy the scenery.
Visitors reach Funao Falls on foot from the parking area at the foot of the mountain. The walk from the parking area to the waterfall viewpoint takes approximately 20 minutes at a relaxed pace.
The route passes through a lush forest that forms a natural green tunnel, allowing visitors to enjoy a peaceful walk surrounded by trees as they make their way toward the falls.
The forest road route follows a paved mountain road and is relatively easy to walk. It is a practical option for visitors who prefer a smoother walking surface.
The natural walking trail follows a more rustic path through the forest. This route allows visitors to experience the surrounding natural environment more directly while walking toward the waterfall.
Both routes take approximately 20 minutes to reach the viewpoint. From the viewpoint, visitors can enjoy not only the waterfall but also panoramic views of the cityscape of Maebashi and Mount Akagi in the distance.
Near Funao Falls, two statues known as the Funao Statue and the Seishi Statue stand quietly among the natural surroundings. Their calm expressions, accompanied by the sound of the waterfall, create a peaceful setting for reflection and relaxation.
Because of the risk of falling rocks, visitors are currently unable to approach the waterfall itself. However, the waterfall can still be fully appreciated from the designated viewpoint, where its white, curtain-like flow can be seen against the surrounding forest.
Because the area around Funao Falls consists of natural mountain paths, visitors should wear comfortable walking shoes and suitable outdoor clothing. After rain, the trails may become muddy or develop puddles, so extra care is recommended.
In winter, the paths and roads can also become icy. Visitors should check conditions in advance and take appropriate precautions while walking.
