Ashigezaki Observatory is a scenic observation point located at the northern end of the Tanesashi Coast in the easternmost part of Hachinohe, Aomori Prefecture. Perched on a rugged cliff approximately 22 meters above sea level, the observatory has an appearance reminiscent of a fortress overlooking the sea. From here, visitors can enjoy sweeping panoramic views of the vast Pacific Ocean.
The observatory is part of the Sanriku Fukkō National Park and is located within the nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty known as the Tanesashi Coast. Its combination of dramatic coastal scenery, open grasslands, wildflowers, and historical significance makes it one of Hachinohe’s most memorable sightseeing destinations.
The name Ashigezaki is believed to come from the gray horses known as ashige that were once raised in this area. The grasslands surrounding the observatory were formerly used as pasture, and the name preserves a connection to this earlier landscape.
Ashigezaki also played an important role in Japan’s coastal history. During the Edo period (1603–1868), the area was used as a lookout point for monitoring foreign ships approaching the coast. During World War II, it became a Japanese naval radio station and a strategic military site equipped with an air-defense radar system.
After the war, the area was opened to the public. Today, its military past has become part of the story of the landscape, while the observatory itself serves as a peaceful destination where visitors can enjoy the natural beauty of the Pacific coast.
The main attraction of Ashigezaki Observatory is its expansive view over the Pacific Ocean. Standing on the cliff, visitors can look out toward the horizon and experience the impressive scale of the open sea.
On clear days, the view extends toward the Shimokita Peninsula to the north, the Hakkōda Mountains to the west, and Mount Hashikamidake to the southeast. The changing weather creates a different atmosphere throughout the year. On misty days, the coastline can take on a mysterious, almost dreamlike appearance.
Just nearby stands the striking white Samekado Lighthouse. Built in 1938, the lighthouse remains in operation today and continues to help ensure maritime safety. Together, the lighthouse, cliffs, grasslands, and ocean create one of the most recognizable landscapes along the Tanesashi Coast.
From spring through summer, the grasslands around Ashigezaki Observatory become especially beautiful as wildflowers begin to bloom. In early summer, vivid yellow Nikkōkisuge (daylilies) add bright color to the green landscape, while nohana-shōbu (Japanese iris) provides deep purple accents.
The combination of ocean breezes, flowering grasslands, rugged cliffs, and the sound of the waves creates a refreshing atmosphere. Visitors can enjoy a peaceful connection with nature while taking in the expansive coastal scenery.
Ashigezaki Observatory is also an important starting point for the Hachinohe section of the Michinoku Coastal Trail, a long-distance walking route following the Pacific coast of the Tohoku region.
The trail heading south from Ashigezaki is particularly popular. Walking along the coast, visitors can enjoy changing views of the Pacific while feeling the sea breeze and observing wildflowers, grasslands, rock formations, and rugged shoreline scenery up close.
Rather than simply visiting the observatory for a quick photo, walking part of the trail is an excellent way to appreciate the character of the Tanesashi Coast and its constantly changing landscape.
Near the observatory is the café Holonbairu, a convenient place to take a break during a drive or coastal walk. The café offers light meals and ice cream that are popular with visitors.
During the warmer months, sitting on the outdoor terrace and looking out toward the Pacific is a particularly enjoyable experience. After exploring the coastline, visitors can relax with a refreshing treat while continuing to enjoy the scenery.
From Ashigezaki Observatory, a walking path leads south toward Nakasuga and the area around Tanesashi-Kaigan Station. The route offers a peaceful coastal walking experience surrounded by seasonal vegetation.
Depending on the season, plants such as rugosa roses, mugwort, and Japanese pampas grass can be seen along the trail. Combined with the gentle sound of the waves, the scenery provides a relaxing contrast to the dramatic cliffs around the observatory.
The Tanesashi Coast is one of Aomori Prefecture’s most celebrated scenic areas and is designated as a National Place of Scenic Beauty. One of its greatest attractions is the remarkable variety of coastal landscapes found within a relatively compact area.
Rocky shores, sandy beaches, sea cliffs, and grassy terraces appear one after another along the coast. The northern section features rugged rocky scenery, while the central area is home to the broad sandy beach of Osuka Beach. Farther south, around Tanesashi-Kaigan Station, expansive natural grasslands create a distinctive open landscape.
Among the area’s highlights are its white singing-sand beaches and natural grassy terraces. With the Pacific Ocean stretching into the distance, these landscapes offer a strong sense of openness and are ideal for photography, walking, and simply taking time to appreciate the scenery.
Ashigezaki Observatory is more than a scenic viewpoint. Its history as a coastal lookout and wartime military site gives the landscape an additional layer of interest, while the surrounding grasslands, wildflowers, cliffs, lighthouse, and ocean showcase the natural beauty of the Tanesashi Coast.
On a clear day, the Pacific appears bright blue beneath the open sky. When morning mist rolls in, the coastline takes on a mysterious atmosphere. At sunset, the sky and ocean can be transformed by warm colors. Each visit can therefore offer a completely different view.
For travelers exploring northern Japan, Ashigezaki Observatory is an excellent place to experience the dramatic natural beauty of Hachinohe and the Pacific coast of Tohoku. Whether you stop briefly for the panoramic view, take a walk along the Michinoku Coastal Trail, admire the seasonal flowers, or relax at a nearby café, this scenic spot offers a memorable opportunity to experience the landscape at a leisurely pace.
