Tatehana Wharf Morning Market

One of Japan’s Largest Port-Side Morning Markets

Tatehana Wharf Morning Market is one of Japan’s largest and most vibrant morning markets. It is held every Sunday from March through December at Tatehana Fishing Port in Hachinohe, Aomori Prefecture.

The market features approximately 350 vendors and attracts more than 30,000 visitors every Sunday. Locally known as the “Tatehana Morning Market,” it has become one of Hachinohe’s best-known tourist attractions as well as an important part of local weekend life.

The first market was held on March 21, 2004. Since then, it has grown from a relatively small local market into a huge gathering where local residents, farmers, fishermen, food vendors, and travelers come together before the day begins.

A Lively Market at the Fishing Port

The market is organized by the Minato Sunday Morning Market Association and begins before sunrise every Sunday. The normally quiet fishing port is transformed into a bustling marketplace stretching for approximately 800 meters.

Colorful stalls line the waterfront, creating an atmosphere that feels more like a local festival than an ordinary market. Vendors come not only from Hachinohe but also from throughout Aomori Prefecture and northern Iwate Prefecture, bringing together the energy and flavors of northern Japan.

Fresh seafood and locally grown vegetables are among the main attractions, but visitors will also find an enormous variety of ready-to-eat foods. Grilled dishes, noodles, ramen, soba, coffee, bread, sweets, and many other foods can be enjoyed while walking around the market.

For travelers, this is an excellent place to experience the everyday food culture and friendly atmosphere of northern Japan in a lively, informal setting.

How to Enjoy the Morning Market

The market opens at around 3:00 a.m., and the busiest period is usually between approximately 6:00 and 7:00 a.m.. Some popular vendors may sell out early, while other stalls begin packing up after 8:00 a.m.

For this reason, visitors who want to experience the market at its liveliest—or who have specific foods they want to try—should arrive as early as possible.

The range of products is remarkably diverse. Alongside seafood, vegetables, mountain vegetables, and other local ingredients, visitors may encounter unusual foods, household goods, souvenirs, and unexpected finds. Every visit can bring a new discovery, which is one reason the market is popular with both local regulars and tourists.

Local Food You Should Try

Shioteba

Shioteba is a popular local market snack made from fried chicken wings. A half-size version is also available exclusively at the morning market, making it particularly convenient for visitors who want to try several different foods while walking around.

Its popularity often results in long lines, so arriving early is recommended.

Saba Koro

Saba Koro is a creative local dish inspired by Hachinohe’s famous mackerel cuisine. Mackerel rice is combined with cheese and shaped into a croquette, creating a distinctive snack that has become especially popular among visitors.

Regional Specialties

The market offers many other foods that reflect the culinary culture of northern Japan, including senbei-jiru, a Hachinohe specialty soup made with wheat crackers, and horse meat hot pot.

Visitors can also find xiaolongbao made with rice flour from Towada, freshly baked bread from the bakery Angelina, Koiwai milk, and a wide range of snacks and desserts.

With so many choices available, Tatehana Wharf Morning Market is an ideal destination for travelers who enjoy food-focused sightseeing and Japanese street-market culture.

Meeting Local People

Food is only part of the market’s appeal. One of the most memorable aspects of Tatehana Wharf Morning Market is the opportunity to interact with local people.

Vendors often chat casually with customers, while regular visitors greet one another and catch up over breakfast. The friendly and down-to-earth atmosphere gives travelers a chance to experience a side of Japan that can be difficult to find at conventional tourist attractions.

Even if you do not speak much Japanese, simply walking through the market, watching the vendors at work, and sharing in the excitement can be a memorable experience.

Every Sunday morning, the fishing port effectively becomes a small local festival, bringing together food, conversation, and community spirit.

Meet Ikadon, the Market’s Unusual Local Character

Visitors may also encounter the market’s eccentric local character, Ikadon.

Ikadon is a handmade costume character featuring a squid-shaped face with the Japanese characters for “Hachinohe” incorporated into its design. The character has a wonderfully unconventional appearance—often amusing adults while occasionally startling younger children.

Although Ikadon is not an officially recognized mascot, the character has developed a following of its own. Some visitors even come specifically hoping to meet Ikadon.

This playful and slightly unpredictable element adds to the unique personality of the morning market.

The History of Tatehana Wharf Morning Market

The history of Tatehana Wharf Morning Market began relatively recently, on March 21, 2004. It was started by Takao and Akiko Uemura after itinerant vendors and morning-market sellers from other areas began looking for a larger place to sell their goods.

Before moving to Tatehana Fishing Port, a morning market had been held in the Minato-machi shopping district. As the number of visitors increased, however, traffic and pedestrian safety became concerns. The fishing port offered a much larger space and better parking conditions, making it a suitable new location.

The market initially had only around 70 vendors. It subsequently expanded rapidly and eventually became one of the largest morning markets in Japan.

The Market and the 2011 Earthquake and Tsunami

Tatehana Fishing Port and the surrounding area were affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami of March 11, 2011.

As a result, the opening of the market that year was postponed from March 20 until July 3. Despite the damage and difficulties caused by the disaster, local people worked together to bring the market back.

Its reopening became one of the signs of recovery for the local community, demonstrating the importance of the market not only as a tourist attraction but also as a place where people could reconnect after the disaster.

New Events and Contemporary Initiatives

Tatehana Wharf Morning Market continues to introduce new ideas while maintaining its traditional local character.

Since 2020, the local idol group pacchi has served as a promotional ambassador for the market. The group has performed live shows in the early morning, adding music and entertainment to the already lively atmosphere.

These events have helped make the market attractive to a wider range of visitors while giving the traditional morning-market experience a modern and energetic twist.

An Unforgettable Morning in Hachinohe

Tatehana Wharf Morning Market is much more than a place to shop for food. It brings together local cuisine, traditional market culture, regional products, friendly conversations, and the lively spirit of Hachinohe.

Visitors can sample fresh seafood, discover unusual local dishes, browse an incredible variety of stalls, meet local vendors, and experience the atmosphere of a huge Japanese morning market beside an active fishing port.

For international travelers, it is also an excellent opportunity to experience everyday local life in northern Japan rather than simply visiting conventional tourist attractions.
