Samekado Lighthouse

A White Beacon Overlooking the Pacific Ocean

Samekado Lighthouse stands on a cape in Same, Hachinohe City, Aomori Prefecture, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The striking white lighthouse has long helped guide ships traveling to and from Hachinohe Port and remains an important part of the area’s maritime landscape.

With its brilliant white exterior set against the deep blue of the Pacific, the lighthouse is also one of Hachinohe’s most photogenic coastal landmarks. It has been selected as one of the “50 Best Lighthouses in Japan,” recognizing its scenic beauty and importance as a representative lighthouse in the country.

For visitors exploring the northeastern coast of Japan, Samekado Lighthouse offers a memorable combination of maritime history, dramatic coastal scenery, and the refreshing atmosphere of the open ocean.

Surrounded by Beautiful Coastal Nature

The area around Samekado Lighthouse forms part of Sanriku Fukkō National Park, a protected coastal region known for its spectacular scenery. The nearby Tanesashi Coast is particularly famous for its combination of rugged coastline, grassy landscapes, rocky shores, and views across the Pacific.

The area is also home to several other attractions. Nearby Kabushima Island is famous as a breeding ground for black-tailed gulls, while Taihei Ranch offers open pastoral scenery where livestock graze against the backdrop of the coastal landscape.

Together, these attractions create a distinctive sightseeing area where the ocean, grasslands, wildlife, and human activity exist side by side.

Beautiful Views from Ashigezaki Observatory

One of the best places to appreciate Samekado Lighthouse from a distance is Ashigezaki Observatory. On a clear day, the white lighthouse stands out dramatically against the blue Pacific Ocean, creating one of the most memorable views along the Tanesashi Coast.

The observatory is an excellent place to stop and enjoy the expansive coastal panorama. The contrast between the white lighthouse, green coastal vegetation, and blue ocean is especially attractive to photographers.

A Lighthouse with a Long Maritime History

Samekado Lighthouse was first illuminated on February 16, 1938. Since then, it has continued to serve as a guide for vessels navigating the waters around Hachinohe.

Over the decades, the lighthouse has undergone a number of changes and improvements. These include restoration and relighting after the disruptions of the war years, the installation of radio equipment, and seismic reinforcement work to ensure the continued safety and stability of the structure.

During the period when the lighthouse used a fourth-order Fresnel lens, its characteristic light shone across the night sea and served as an important navigational guide for ships and sailors.

Today, the lighthouse remains a visible reminder of the long relationship between Hachinohe and the sea.

Public Tours and the Lighthouse Experience

Since fiscal 2013, Samekado Lighthouse has generally been opened to the public on weekends and public holidays from April through October.

When the lighthouse is open, visitors can enter the tower and climb to the upper level. From the top, the vast Pacific Ocean stretches out before you, offering an impressive 360-degree panoramic view.

Standing high above the coastline while feeling the ocean breeze and looking across the endless horizon provides a very different perspective from viewing the lighthouse from the ground. The experience is particularly memorable on clear days, when the boundary between the deep blue sea and sky seems to disappear into the distance.

A Scenic Stop Along the Tanesashi Coast

Samekado Lighthouse is especially enjoyable as part of a wider coastal sightseeing trip. Visitors can combine a visit to the lighthouse with Ashigezaki Observatory, Tanesashi Coast, Kabushima Island, and other attractions along the Pacific coastline.

The surrounding coastal paths and grassy areas also make the journey itself part of the experience. In warmer seasons, wildflowers and coastal plants add color to the landscape, while the constant sea breeze creates a refreshing atmosphere.

Access to Samekado Lighthouse

By train: Samekado Lighthouse is approximately a 30-minute walk from Same Station on the JR Hachinohe Line.

By taxi: The lighthouse is approximately 5 minutes by taxi from Same Station.

By bus: Visitors can also use Hachinohe City Bus services and get off at the Seagull View Hotel bus stop.

The journey to the lighthouse is itself enjoyable, as visitors can walk through the coastal landscape and encounter wildflowers and grasses swaying in the sea breeze.

Experience Hachinohe’s Pacific Coast

Samekado Lighthouse is much more than a navigational landmark. Its white tower represents the long maritime history of Hachinohe while standing within one of the city’s most beautiful natural landscapes.

For international visitors, it is an excellent place to experience the dramatic scenery of Japan’s Pacific coast away from the country’s major urban centers. The combination of a historic lighthouse, wide-open ocean views, grassy coastal landscapes, and nearby wildlife creates a distinctly northern Japanese atmosphere.

If you are visiting the Tanesashi Coast, be sure to include Samekado Lighthouse in your itinerary. Whether you view the lighthouse from Ashigezaki Observatory, walk along the surrounding coast, or climb the tower when it is open to the public, the experience offers a memorable encounter with the wind, light, and vastness of the Pacific Ocean.
