Haibara Torimiyama Park

A Scenic Nature Park with Seasonal Colors and Spectacular Mountain Views

Haibara Torimiyama Park is a beautiful natural retreat in Haibara Hagihara, Uda City, Nara Prefecture. Located near the summit of Mount Torimi at an elevation of approximately 735 meters, the park lies within Muro-Akame-Aoyama Quasi-National Park. It is a popular destination for visitors and hikers who come to enjoy its changing seasonal scenery, sweeping views, and tranquil atmosphere, where history and nature blend harmoniously.

A Historic Site Associated with Emperor Jimmu

Mount Torimi is a historically significant mountain mentioned in the Nihon Shoki, one of Japan’s oldest chronicles. According to tradition, it is associated with a sacred site where Emperor Jimmu, the legendary first emperor of Japan, offered prayers to the ancestral deities of the imperial family.

Monuments commemorating the traditional site associated with Emperor Jimmu, along with poetry monuments, can be found throughout the park. Visitors can stroll through the peaceful surroundings while reflecting on Japan’s ancient history and mythology. The quiet setting and expansive views create a particularly memorable atmosphere.

Panoramic Views across the Yamato Basin

The park’s observation areas offer sweeping views of the Yamato Basin and the surrounding mountains of Uda. From the main parking area, the observation point can be reached on foot in approximately 10 minutes, making it relatively easy to enjoy the scenery without a lengthy hike.

One of the most striking sights is Mount Nukai-dake, also known as Yamato Fuji, whose distinctive mountain profile stands out against the surrounding landscape. The combination of distant mountains, open skies, and changing seasonal colors makes the park a favorite destination for photographers and nature lovers.

A Spectacular Rhododendron Garden in Spring

In spring, approximately 5,000 to 6,000 azalea bushes bring vibrant colors to the park, creating a landscape sometimes described as a “flower garden in the sky.” The flowers typically reach their peak from early to mid-May, when the annual Torimiyama Park Azalea Festival is held and attracts many visitors.

Mountain cherry blossoms bloom around the same season, adding delicate shades of pink to the scenery. The combination of colorful azaleas, cherry blossoms, and fresh greenery makes spring one of the most rewarding times to visit.

Enjoy Nature throughout the Four Seasons

The park offers something different in every season. In summer, visitors may see irises, water lilies, and water shield plants growing around the water features, while the cool mountain air provides a refreshing escape from the heat of the lowlands.

Autumn brings beautiful foliage, usually from mid- to late November, as the mountains turn shades of red, orange, and gold. In winter, the park takes on a quieter character, with occasional snow-covered scenery and opportunities to watch the first sunrise of the year.

The Tokai Nature Trail also passes through the park, making it a convenient stop for hikers exploring the surrounding countryside.

Park Facilities and Access

The park covers approximately 8.1 hectares and includes observation areas, an event plaza, public restrooms, and a free parking lot with space for around 20 vehicles. Its combination of accessible viewpoints and walking paths makes it suitable for both casual visitors and outdoor enthusiasts.

By public transportation, take a Nara Kotsu bus from Kintetsu Haibara Station and get off at Uda Police Station bus stop, then walk approximately 2 kilometers to the park. By car, the park is about 12 kilometers from the Hari Interchange on the Meihan Expressway, via National Route 369.

With its ancient legends, abundant seasonal flowers, and spectacular mountain scenery, Haibara Torimiyama Park is an inviting destination for anyone wishing to experience the natural beauty and historical heritage of Uda.
