Hirosaki City Museum

Discover the History and Culture of a Castle Town

Hirosaki City Museum is an excellent place to learn about the history, culture, and traditional heritage of Hirosaki and the wider Tsugaru region of Aomori Prefecture. Located inside Hirosaki Park, where Hirosaki Castle stands, the museum is surrounded by beautiful seasonal scenery and historic landscapes.

The museum building itself is an important architectural attraction. It was designed by Kuniо Maekawa, one of Japan’s leading modern architects. Construction was completed in 1976, and the museum opened to the public in 1977.

Its combination of modern architecture and the historic surroundings of Hirosaki Castle creates a distinctive atmosphere. Visitors can explore the museum’s exhibitions while also enjoying the natural beauty of the park throughout the year.

Architecture Designed to Complement Hirosaki Castle

One of the most interesting features of Hirosaki City Museum is its thoughtful architectural design. The building was planned specifically for its location within a park containing a historic Japanese castle.

The layout makes it possible to view one of Hirosaki Castle’s traditional turrets from inside the museum. Rather than competing with the historic scenery, the modern building was designed to coexist with and enhance its surroundings.

This harmonious relationship between contemporary architecture, historic structures, and nature is one of the museum’s defining characteristics.

Selected as One of Japan’s 100 Outstanding Public Buildings

The building’s distinctive design and architectural quality were officially recognized in 1998, when Hirosaki City Museum was selected as one of Japan’s 100 Outstanding Public Buildings.

The museum underwent major renovation work beginning in 2012, including updates to aging facilities and equipment. It reopened in 2014 with improved facilities, providing visitors with a more comfortable and functional environment while preserving the character of Maekawa’s original design.

A Museum Surrounded by History and Nature

Hirosaki City Museum stands on part of the former San-no-Maru area of Hirosaki Castle. The grounds are surrounded by mature pine trees and other seasonal vegetation, creating a calm and peaceful setting.

Because the museum is located within Hirosaki Park, a visit can easily be combined with sightseeing around Hirosaki Castle and the surrounding historic district.

The scenery changes throughout the year. Spring brings the famous cherry blossoms of Hirosaki Park, while summer offers lush green foliage. Autumn brings colorful leaves, and winter transforms the historic park into a quiet snow-covered landscape.

This combination of exhibitions and seasonal scenery makes the museum appealing not only to history enthusiasts but also to travelers interested in architecture, Japanese gardens, and the atmosphere of traditional castle towns.

Collections and Exhibitions

The museum’s collections focus primarily on the history and culture of the Tsugaru region. Among the most important materials are former possessions of the Tsugaru family, the lords of the Hirosaki Domain.

The exhibitions also introduce art and crafts that developed under the Hirosaki Domain, historical documents, archaeological materials, local traditions, and the achievements of notable people connected with the region.

With approximately 20,000 items in its collection as of March 2022, the museum provides a broad overview of Tsugaru’s cultural heritage.

Archaeological Treasure: The Wild Boar-Shaped Clay Figure

One particularly fascinating object in the museum’s collection is a small wild boar-shaped clay figure discovered at the Tōkoshiuchi archaeological site in Hirosaki in 1960.

The object is believed to date from the Late Jomon period, making it an important example of prehistoric Japanese art. It was designated a National Important Cultural Property in 2011.

Because of its charming appearance, the figure has been affectionately nicknamed “Inocchi.” The popularity of the object has even led to the creation of a mascot character based on it.

For visitors interested in ancient Japanese history, this small artifact provides a fascinating glimpse into the artistic imagination of people who lived in the region thousands of years ago.

The History of the Tsugaru Clan

The museum also introduces the history of the Tsugaru clan, who ruled the Tsugaru region from the late 16th century until the abolition of the feudal domains following the Meiji Restoration.

The Tsugaru family ruled from Hirosaki Castle and played a major role in the political and cultural development of the region. After the feudal system was abolished during the Meiji period, the family became part of the Japanese nobility and was granted the title of Count.

Members of successive generations of the family commonly used the character “Nobu” in their names. Historical documents and artifacts connected with the Tsugaru family provide valuable insight into the history of Hirosaki as a castle town.

Understanding Tsugaru Culture

Although the museum’s collection includes many objects associated with political history, its exhibitions extend beyond the story of the ruling family.

Visitors can learn about the traditional arts, crafts, customs, and everyday culture that developed in the Tsugaru region. This broader perspective helps explain how the people of the area lived and how local traditions evolved over centuries.

For international visitors, the museum can provide useful historical context before exploring Hirosaki Castle, the old castle-town streets, traditional crafts, and other cultural attractions around Hirosaki.

Access to Hirosaki City Museum

By Car

Hirosaki City Museum is approximately 30 minutes by car from the Owani-Hirosaki Interchange on the Tohoku Expressway.

By Public Transportation

Visitors can take the city’s Dotemachi Loop 100-yen Bus and get off at the Shiyakusho-mae bus stop. The museum is approximately a five-minute walk from the stop.

A Gateway to Hirosaki’s History and Culture

Hirosaki City Museum offers an ideal introduction to the history and culture of Hirosaki and the Tsugaru region. Its collection includes valuable archaeological artifacts, historical materials, traditional arts and crafts, and objects associated with the Tsugaru family.

At the same time, the museum itself is worth visiting for its architecture. Designed by Kunio Maekawa, the building demonstrates how modern Japanese architecture can be carefully integrated into a historic landscape.

The experience changes dramatically with the seasons, from cherry blossoms in spring to colorful foliage in autumn and snow-covered landscapes in winter.
