Tsugaru Domain Neputa Village: (Tsugaru-han Neputa-mura)

Experience the Traditional Culture of Tsugaru

Tsugaru-han Neputa Village is a cultural tourism facility in Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture, where visitors can experience the traditional culture of the Tsugaru region in one place. The facility is especially known for its exhibitions related to the Hirosaki Neputa Festival, one of the most important traditional festivals in northern Japan.

Visitors can see enormous Neputa floats, listen to live performances of Tsugaru shamisen, try traditional craft activities, explore a beautiful Japanese garden, and enjoy local Tsugaru cuisine. Because many of these experiences are available throughout the year, Tsugaru-han Neputa Village is an excellent place to discover the culture of Hirosaki even outside the summer festival season.

Discover the Culture of the Tsugaru Region

The Tsugaru region has developed a distinctive culture shaped by its snowy climate, agricultural traditions, local history, music, crafts, and festivals. Tsugaru-han Neputa Village brings many of these cultural elements together in an easy-to-experience setting.

For international visitors, the facility provides an opportunity to learn about local traditions while also enjoying hands-on activities. Rather than simply viewing exhibits, visitors can see, hear, taste, and experience Tsugaru culture for themselves.

The Hirosaki Neputa Exhibition Hall

One of the main attractions is the Hirosaki Neputa Exhibition Hall, where full-size Neputa floats are displayed. Some of the floats reach approximately 10 meters in height, giving visitors a sense of the enormous scale of the floats used during the Hirosaki Neputa Festival.

Visitors can even enter inside some of the floats and take a close look at their intricate framework and construction. This offers a fascinating perspective that is difficult to obtain simply by watching the festival parade from the street.

Traditional festival music is also performed regularly, with Japanese flutes and drums recreating the energetic atmosphere of the Hirosaki Neputa Festival. Even when visiting outside the festival season, guests can therefore experience some of the sights and sounds associated with this famous summer event.

Neputa Artwork and Traditional Crafts

The facility also introduces the artistic side of Neputa culture. Exhibits include works by renowned local Neputa artists, including Tatsuon Hasegawa, known as “Neputa Osho,” and Yoshio Abe, as well as works by members of the Tsugaru Nishiki-e Artists Association.

Neputa painting is characterized by bold figures and dramatic compositions, often depicting warriors, historical figures, mythology, and traditional stories. The artwork becomes particularly striking when illuminated during the festival.

Visitors can also learn about traditional Tsugaru crafts, including Tsugaru lacquerware and Tsugaru kites. Demonstrations and hands-on experiences provide a closer look at the techniques and creativity that have been passed down through generations.

Live Tsugaru Shamisen Performances

Another highlight of Tsugaru-han Neputa Village is the live performance of Tsugaru shamisen, a distinctive style of Japanese traditional music.

Performances are held daily at the facility’s Sangen-do hall. The Tsugaru shamisen is known for its powerful rhythm, energetic playing style, and expressive sound. At the same time, its music can have a deeply emotional and melancholic quality.

The sound of the shamisen reflects the character of the Tsugaru region, where long winters and a challenging natural environment have influenced local culture and traditions. Hearing a live performance is therefore an excellent way to gain a deeper appreciation of the region’s musical heritage.

Yokuen Garden and Yokuen-an Tea House

Tsugaru-han Neputa Village is not only an indoor cultural facility. The grounds also include Yokuen Garden, a traditional Japanese garden designated as a National Registered Monument.

The garden was created in the Oishi Bugaku-ryu style of Japanese garden design. It incorporates the surrounding scenery, including views of Mount Iwaki and old pine trees in nearby Hirosaki Park, creating a peaceful landscape that changes beautifully with the seasons.

Visitors can enjoy seasonal flowers, greenery, autumn colors, and the distinctive atmosphere of a Japanese garden in a snowy northern climate.

Yokuen-an: A Historic Tea House

Within the garden is Yokuen-an, a traditional tea house built in the early Meiji period. The building has been designated as a cultural property and offers a glimpse into the architectural and cultural traditions of the time.

The tea house is particularly atmospheric during winter, when snow transforms the garden into a quiet and beautiful landscape characteristic of northern Japan.

Hands-On Traditional Craft Experiences

One of the most enjoyable aspects of Tsugaru-han Neputa Village is the opportunity to create traditional crafts yourself. The available experiences allow visitors to take home a handmade souvenir while learning about local artistic traditions.

Traditional Crafts You Can Experience

Depending on the program and season, activities include painting a Kingyo Neputa lantern, painting a traditional Tsugaru kite, decorating an apple-shaped clay bell, and creating crafts using Tsugaru-yaki pottery clay.

The Kingyo Neputa, or goldfish-shaped Neputa lantern, is particularly popular. Its colorful design is associated with the Neputa tradition and makes a memorable souvenir of a visit to Hirosaki.

These activities are suitable for visitors who want more than sightseeing. They provide a chance to interact directly with local culture and create something with their own hands.

Shopping and Local Food

Local Products and Souvenirs

The facility has a shopping area offering a wide selection of local agricultural, forestry, and seafood products, traditional crafts, and souvenirs.

A JA farmers’ market also offers locally grown apples and fresh vegetables. Hirosaki and the wider Tsugaru region are particularly famous for apples, making locally produced apples and apple-related products popular choices for visitors.

Traditional handmade rice crackers are also available, with demonstrations and sales providing an opportunity to see how these simple local snacks are prepared.

From around June to October, a Sunday morning market is also held on selected dates, offering fresh local produce and other regional products.

Traditional Tsugaru Cuisine

The Tsugaru Umamaiya restaurant introduces visitors to traditional home-style dishes from the Tsugaru region. It is recognized as a restaurant that preserves and passes on the culinary heritage of Tsugaru.

Popular local dishes include kaibayaki miso, a traditional dish featuring miso and egg cooked with seafood in a shell-shaped vessel, and kenoshiru, a hearty vegetable soup traditionally enjoyed in the region.

The restaurant also serves rice made from locally produced Tsugaru Roman rice, cooked in a traditional stone hearth. This is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy authentic regional flavors while learning more about the food culture of northern Japan.

History and Development of Tsugaru-han Neputa Village

Tsugaru-han Neputa Village was established in 1981 and subsequently renovated in 1988 and 2002. The site covers approximately 8,900 square meters and includes exhibition spaces, shops, gardens, restaurants, and facilities for cultural experiences.

The facility has also received attention in international tourism guides. It is notable as the only Neputa- or Nebuta-related facility in Aomori Prefecture to have been featured in the Michelin Green Guide Japan.

Its combination of traditional festival culture, music, crafts, gardens, and food makes it an important cultural attraction in Hirosaki.
